This thread blows goats. I want the last few minutes of my life back for reading it.
I mean that in a non-conformist type way. |
Nonsense! You got a lead on an excellent movie, Whiskey Galore! |

well right now the big fad at my elem. school is yo-yos....
I love the people who complain about this stuff with elementary kids here without even realizing it's exactly the same in our countries all the way through til university.
I also love the people who complain about the children being spoiled without realizing than probably 90% of children in the U.S. are more spoiled.
I also love people who complain about conformity here without realizing how blatant the conformity is back home |
Well said. |

I wasn't complaining about anything. I was making an observation and asking a question.
I never even mentioned that they are spoiled. As for 90% of the kids in the US being spoiled, I might want to double check that figure. Where I come from there is plenty more diversity than any place, including Ittaweon, in Korea. Not just ethnic, but across the whole spectrum (work force, professions, etc.)
So you guys mustn't really love me. Awww my heart is broken. |

| I think that the OP was observing that kids 'conform' anywhere, but that it doesn't end, here. Korean society tends to be a place without imagination. Indeed, 'Korean imagination' is an oxymoron. This is by no means exclusive to Korea (Japan is similar, but they're far more sanitary about it all). Innovators are thin on the ground in these parts. Imitators are everywhere. Blame it on the education system here, which is geared to produce drones, not people with ideas. |

| Another example of Korean conformity, one which I want to bring to attention because it's developing in the early ages. Ever since I have been teaching here, when one child brings something they bought from the local stationery store, all the kids seem to jump on the band wagon. |
I agree Koreans are monoculture but what you describe could be any grade school class in North America. All kids follow trends like crazy. I remember when everyone in grade 4 wanted to be the Fonz and we all had out Happy Days tshirts and lunch boxes. |

I don't mean this as an insult but I believe most Koreans are honestly scared to death of non-conformity, of being "noticed" as someone different or doing something different that is outside the norm for Koreans..
there have been many times my Korean friends have said "I envy your ability to *insert something interesting or fun or dangerously crazy*
"I wish I could do that but Koreans just don't."
I think a lot of them have a sense of adventure inside wanting to break out (younger generation moreso) but are afraid to make the leap...
so I always cheer on the kids who dye their hair or have piercings, etc...at least they are trying |
