If our students don't get their hair cut to a certain length tomorrow, they will have it cut in class. Two teachers go to every room and measure every student's hair with a ruler. They do this every 3 to 4 months. Can be no longer than 15cm.

What do they cut and snip at the boys schools? Is this why foreign women keep complaining about Korean men? Laughing

It's only about control..
...korean males wanting to control k women. And this is an advanced nation?
WTF is having long hair wrong about? It's only about control...I'm the boss and you listen to me. I'm the teacher...I know better than you do.
Derrek..show this to the male teachers....they are idiots. If they could only see it for themselves. They wake up in the morning...go to the bathroom...look in the mirror and start yelling "who the f*&^ you looking at!" These guys are just unhappy.

Often, the female teachers do the haircutting.

Have you ever wondered about how much our society has changed in the past few hundred years? For example, in the past, it was common for people to marry much younger. Heck, my dad married my mom at age 19 (she was 21). In the west, people now freak if someone marries that young anymore. And men are considered perverts if they date/marry someone 19 to 22 when they're older by more than, say... 8 years.

This used to be COMMON in the past. Heck, people used to be 16 and marry.

We could blame it all on controlling men, but I sometimes wonder how much it has to do with women choosing to wait until they're in their 30s so they can establish a career, etc.... and having to deal with the fact that the men want to run after the 20-something girls who look better and aren't jaded. My students tell me about situations where older men try to talk to them, chase them, etc...

Think about that, and then you understand why our 30-something ajumma teachers don't seem to mind chopping off their young students' hair. It helps to eliminate competition. Laughing

They do the same thing to the boys at my school. They also cut their nails when they get too long.

sometimes they don't bother with clippers either. Just regular sisscors and cut their nails. There is also mandated hair cut that the boys have to have. If it's too short they get in trouble too! A group of boys at a neighboring school were on detention for a month after they buzz cut their hair ala shilmido!

No it's all about individuality. I've come to the conclusion that middle school is basically about taking any type of individuality a kid has and squashing it.

I've been told that it's so all the students are all the same and can concentrate on their studies better. The theory being that if they all wear uniforms, have the same haircut and can't wear make-up or nail polish; there is no vanity or jealousy, everyone is the equal and thus all the students will only concentrate on their studies. Rolling Eyes

Koreans love being "equal". (Equal meaning having no individuality.)

My school, though, is a "free" school. The students can have any length of hair as long as it's tied back. They still aren't allowed to wear make-up or earrings though. On Friday, there was a girl on her knees with hands up in the air because she got caught with newly pierced ears.

As far as I know, it's not an encouraged practice. In fact, it runs against the CRC (Children Rights Convention), which the South Korean governement ratified in 1991 . Simply put, it is disrespectful of the students' right to self-determination.

I was told that schools were supposed to abolish, "Zero hour," however our school still practices it.

"Zero hour" is requiring one hour of quiet study before classes start in the mornings.

Our principal is very old-fashioned, and basically ignores whatever government laws she doesn't want to follow.

My students hate it.

It's just a tool to enforce conformity. Thank Park Jung Hee for that. For girls, however, the reasons for this type of oppression are a bit more complex. Simply put, long hair has been sexualized in Korea.

So basically the school gives them a free haircut every 3 or 4 months.

If I was a girl at that school, why would I bother paying for a haircut then? Laughing
