So I'm watching the Korean news tonight and I hear more about the foreigners who are ruining this country. I, like many people, am already sick of hearing the media blaming foreigners for all the problems of Korea, but it's always easier to blame someone else than take a hard look at yourself.

They were talking about Russian or Filipino girls in the "entertainment industry" who used to get visas quite easily having a hard time these days. So, American soldiers are going to Russia or the Phillipines and bringing them in as their fiances. For this, the soldiers are paid about 5000 dollars.

Then there was some related story about some high up person who was extorting money from local bars near the Osan air base. I didn't get all the details, but it was something about if the bar didn't pay, the guy would put that bar on the black list so soldiers couldn't frequent there.

Anybody know more about this?

That's a total load of scapegoatist crap. There are Korean agencies that have been bringing Russians girls into this country for years to service the Korean male's thirst for blond-haired, blue-eyed tail. Where the hell is that story?

For a country that is known to be one of the most heavily trafficked countries for buying and selling women, their media shouldn't be even bringing this subject up in any form or fashion.

The thing is I am sure that a couple (perhaps only one) of soldiers have been paid to bring women over as thier wife. But, I would bet my left nut that the tv program made it sound like it was hundreds upon hundreds.

Even when the media is doing a non-controversial piece they tend to sensationalize it and write whatever they feel like. I cannot tell you how many times I have been mis-quoted or had quotes totally fabricated when interviewed about my store. They were never deragotory or hurtful, but it still pissed me off a bit.

I would like to see the media do a piece on the media. Kind of like the documenty "Out Foxed". Now that would be a hoot.

It was on the 10 o'clock news....I'm not a 100% sure, but I think it was SBS.

I'll admit I didn't understand it all, but I got the impression that they were implying that these girls perform in the clubs where the soldiers go.

They also referenced some similar story, done in the States by Fox news. Anybody see that one?

I saw a great news story a while ago about a web animation that was supposed to contain subliminal messages that caused a korean high school kid to kill himself.
It was a good 10 minute article, interviews with sound-analyzing scientists, pyschologists etc. Spooky music, dramatic reconstructions, the lot- then right at the end the reporter said something like:

"However the suicide turned out to be a hoax. Back to you Yong-Jae"
