This is a group devoted to the free exchange of ideas of how foreign teachers in Korea can work together to improve the quality of education and the working conditions in the ROK. It is the goal of this group to educate the Korean public about the abuses that foreign teachers face, and to find opportunities where we can contribute to the betterment of Korean society.
Please pass the word around. I think there are a lot of good people out there who can get involved and make a difference. I have a few ideas that I will toss out in hte next few days. The more the merrier, though. |

Forning?
Is that short for "fornicating?"

This topic of forming - not "forning" - a group or association came up in another thread a week or so ago, I think. There was, shall we say, a less than overwhelming response. You were one of the only respondents, as I recall.
I applaud you for actually doing something about it and I'd like to support your effort. It may end up being you and I and no one else, if there's no interest out there, but I can live with that.
Especially with these rumoured crackdowns coming and pressures possibly being brought on teachers as a whole, illegal OR legal teachers, it would be nice to know that there is a supportive body of fellow teachers out there.
I'd be interested in hearing more of your ideas, either on the board or as a PM. Good luck. |

If that's what it takes to get people involved, then I will fornicate all day and all night.
On the other hand, that might not be the best draw... |

I think that we should work to educate and inform the public about the importance of quality, student centered education. This includes professional development of teachers and usage of appropriate
curriculum. |
KOTESOL--a fine organisation--already does this.
I like your ideas about doing volunteer work and improving labour relations, though. Perhaps talking to the efl-law folks would be a good starting point. |

It's a bit of a confusing name. Is it for Korean Language teachers or is it (as I assume) for English teachers in Korea? |

This is what happens when I do things while half asleep...
I meant English teachers in Korea...
With any group but English teachers, I bet I could have snuck this ambiguity through. Sorry. |

Thank you for the information about KOTESOL-- I will do my homework on that. The point remains that we must get owners to take development seriously as well.
It reminds me a little bit of a conversation I had with a veteran teacher when I was teaching HS in the United States. She told me that the reason contract negotiations always got ugly was because school administrators knew that deep inside most teachers cared too much about their students to do anything that would harm them (strike, for instance). As a result school boards could stall as much as they wanted, since in the end most teachers cared about their jobs. Hagwon owners know that a lot of teachers want to improve, and will do things out of pride and professional responsibility, even if there is no reward. |
