anyone got a DVIX portable hdd player?
I went over to my korean friends house on saturday and he brought out his DVIX HDD and just connected straight into his TV and he had all his music videos and movies all stored on there.
I was DAMN! I gots to get me one of these!
any of you guys got one? if so how much was it..
he told me they have 20 gig and 100 gig versions..
he said around 200.000 won..

I have one. They are more expensive than that. 100 gigs? Haven't seen it.
But you'll need to bust out your HANGEUL if you want one. |

how much did you pay for it and what size you got?

They're a bit pricey at the moment. Maybe 500,000-600,000. Probably cheaper online.
I know I really want one!! Watch whatever you downloaded overnight on the bus going to work....Great! Long flights, downtime at work...etc. |

A portable hard drive is all that is IG. Nice though. And cheap enough.
What I want is something with a screen so you don't need a TV when on the move. But you can still plug into a big TV when there's one around. |

I've seen the things that IG is talking about, I think it was about 200,000 won for 120 gig, but I could be way off. Anyway this was in Yongsan at one of the stores nearest to the tunnel to/from the train station. When I saw it I thought
"That's so simple! And yet fantastic!"
USB2.0 socket, s-video out, DIVx/MP3 codecs- and you're all set! |

I've seen em too - and I think you can get just the caddy from some places, and add your own hard disk.
The place in Yongsan that prices items as Lemon's guide describes, on the ground floor of Sunin, has them on display (complete with TV to demonstrate).
My favourite place in Sunin, www.pcenjoy.co.kr, has them too. |

yes thats right.. but its not just an ordinary HDD it has some mods to it..
but basically yeah thats what it is..
but sure paying double and having the same thing with a screen too..
thats sweet.. |

Exactly how, when and how often do you all use (or plan to use) your portable DivX players? Is it mainly or exclusively for "movies on the go"?
I've seen these listed all over the Net recently, and very occasionally mentioned in some of the hi-fi/hi-vi magazines that I read. I always skip over them as they're mostly just ads for these players, and the ads all read like engineer's spec sheets. Tedious stuff.
While I think I understand, at a very basic level, what these players can do, I'm not really seeing any real utility or convenience -- if there is one -- for me personally. About as practical as a flat-screen in the shower, as far as I can tell. 
Here's Me --
-- All my movies are on DVD or videotape, and I watch them in my own home 99.9% of the time, on TVs or via projector & big screen in a home theatre.
-- I loathe watching films on small screens or in transit. (As you can imagine, I view the advent of Mobile TV with trepidation and horror, and consider it one of civilisation's great steps backward.)
-- I don't need or particularly desire to watch films on a PC, or on the road when I travel.
-- I don't carry my movies over to my friends' houses or other places to watch them on their TVs or PCs.
-- Oh yes, and I don't download movies off the Internet. I might, but I haven't bothered looking into that. I just assume, perhaps wrongly, that any movies I'd be interested in, and don't already have, aren't available on the Net.
So then, if I never buy a portable DivX player, it's not going to be for lack of money or regard for the technological advances it represents. It'll be because for me, it's like... "Behold, the portable DivX player! The musical toilet seat of our time!" I know there must be more to it than I'm seeing. |

For people who behave oppositely in regard to the activities on your list, they're quite convenient and fun devices. Hence the appeal. |

Well, bully for all of you then! 
I'm not unaware or unimpressed as to the appeal of having your entertainment on the go. In college, my French touring bike was essentially an accessory of my Sony Walkman. Today, I'd say I'm only slightly less of a cinephile than I once was an addict of eminently forgettable pop music. Whereas I used to skip a meal to get the latest Teardrop Explodes single or this month's issue of The Face, today I'll seriously consider dropping a month's salary on second projector that I could easily live without but would just rather not.
But again, how much regular use does one get from these? Are you watching half a movie a day in the subway during the morning commute? Three films a year on the flight home? Or, is it less an "on-the-go" thing, and more a "watch downloaded Divx flicks on the TV in the living room" thing?
Here's where I'm wondering if this would be of practical use to me. Let's say I find movies I want to download from the Net (on one floor), and want to watch them on the big screen (on a different floor). This would be an easy, straightforward way to do that, no? BTW, how is picture quality vs. that of a DVD?
Oh, and thanks for walking grandpa through this, kids. |

For me, both. It's useful on long bus trips here in Korea, flights elsewhere, and just when having to wait somewhere for whatever reason. Of course, these machines also double as text viewers, MP3 players, game machines, and FM radio receivers. I also use them to watch downloaded media files on TV, but if that were all I wanted to do I'd choose a cheaper method than buying one of these devices.

It's easy and straightforward, yes, but again there are cheaper ways. The picture quality depends on how the file you download was recorded from the original medium. |

I saw them for sale at Link-O in Coex last week.
Different sizes and prices.
I'm sure you could find them cheaper elsewhere, though. They had a working one on display. |
