We got a new guy, I think Canadian, who is going around the offices asking for cash loans? Mind you, he's only been on the job since March.

About half the people gave him about 100,000 won.

The other half are avoiding him like the plague.

I'm part of that second group.

I have no problem lending a friend some cash. But an acquantance or a coworker.....depends on whether I like them. I usually limit it to about 50$ though,

Why the hell is he hitting more than one person up for cash? Strangee!

The number ONE rule for lending money...ONLY loan what you can afford to lose.
The majority of the time..you won't get it back and you'll have to keep reminding the person.
If a person has to borrow a 50-100 bucks...then they are really hurting for money!! They borrow 50 from this person...another 100 from someone else, etc. and when it comes time to repay it....they have to borrow again because they have no money having just paid back what they borrowed!
No..... simple rule...loan what you can afford to lose.

Yeah I had a friend who I used to get help from and he would come to me when he needed help. I found it useful as our pay days were 2 weeks apart. It worked well and I trusted him, so no problems.

We aren't alone in this world, helping each other isn't really a bad thing.

Friends, completely different issue.

Co-workers? I like to say, "Oh no! I was just going to ask YOU to loan me 50 bucks!"

You might suggest he ask for a cash advance on his first month salary. That is what bosses are for.

Maybe some of you heard me mention "my doumi friend" before. We hung out a lot last year, and she outright told me she wanted to by my girlfriend, but I knew better. She always seemed to have 3 different guys of various races calling her or doting on her at work. No way, hosea!

After I denied her, she sort of disappeared. Now she calls me up about once every month or two -- always asking for money. I haven't loaned her any, and don't plan to. She has a boyfriend now, and this didn't start until she got the boyfriend. He borrowed something like 7 million won from her and never paid it back. And she now asks ME for money? No way! I don't feel like giving her boyfriend anything, which is exactly where this money is going (her current boyfriend is a mobster-type, according to her). She isn't too bright, sadly. She's not dumb, just not wise.

probably the guy just got here.. like you said march..
so he needs some money to get him through the month until pay day!
he is not going anywhere.. he has signed a contract with your school..
so sure lend him a few bucks if you got it..
helping a fello out.. whats wrong with that? of course if you have a few bob to spare..
you dont have to give him 100.000 you can lend him 20. ask him why..
why he needs it.. it it sounds legit enough and you can spare it.. go for it..
why say NO!? man never understood tight arses like that you say NO sorry. even though they have the coin to spare.. would rather watch a man starve than help him out.. but they demand to be paid 50 an hour from koreans! WHATEVER!!!

I've had a couple bad experiences lending people coin. I have no problem if it's a good friend and if it was a trivial amount I wouldn't expect to get it back ( I wouldn't ask for it anyways). I'm pretty sure I wouldn't lend any to a co-worker because it'll open the door for more and more beg sessions. I've lent money to guys in the past and when it comes time to pay up or I need some money they get all sorry man I can't pay you back. Ok then what were you using all weekend to get hammered? Some people have no moral sense. If I know I owe someone some money, even if it's $5 or $10, I think about it steady. When I owe the bank money, well that's another story......

That's what sucks most in ESL. Those particular teachers who require a "helping" hand. Helped one finance her trip to see her mum 500,000(didn't even get thanks). Another who was "short" 100,000(originally wanted 500,000, thank god) got fired and left the country within two weeks. Covering for those who aint got 'nuff in restaurants or buying a drink cause they're hit hard times(their entertainment value was reward enough at times). Now I aint a sucker. People in need and the concept of a loan I can handle but, the selective memory is irksome as it's a hassel to get the loot back. ESL seems rife with people on the make.

It does seem that this was a first month and working in Korea the first month does take it out of you. The extra costs of house hold goods, the rip offs that occur, the financial misunderstandings. We have all been there!!!

Well I have!! I paid it back, don't treat everyone as if they will rip you off, maybe they won't!!!!!!!!!! We are strangers in a strange land, if we don't help each other, who do we rely on??? Our Neighbors????
