I was almost booted out the restaurant for laughing when Uzbekistan scored their only goal...it would've gone unnoticed but for the sudden silence that hit the place when it happened. All faces turned to me, and the owner didn't even look at me on the way out..
But for the life of me I cannot be happy when Korea wins a soccer game. Anyone else experience this? I definitely fail the "soccer test" of loyalty to this country..!!!I can't help it,..I was secretly wanting an equaliser off Uzbekistan!!  |

Oops sorry- just seen this
Was a good game, huge crowd, fun atmosphere- I thought Korea looked pretty uninspiring, but they were patient and eventually got the goals they needed. 2-1 was pretty generous to the Uzbekistanis considering that Korea completely dominated. |

I agree Rapier. I too was secretly hoping that Uzbekistan would tie things up. All the Koreans were being super obnoxious at the gym to the point of being completely nauseating. I suppose I now know what people must feel like when they run into us rabid Team Canada hockey fans.  Hee hee...Gawd I miss the NHL...�Ф� |

Offense: needs some work!! They've GOT to get over the "only the older guys should score" thing! So many times, they booted to the outside to let an "older" guy score when a younger guy was in position to score. Stupid!!! |

| AS an above poster noted, Korea seems to play well on their home soil, but have troubles abroad. Should be real interesting in Germany next year. They had a hell of a support group here in 2002, which they won't have in such numbers at next year's Cup. I wonder how many Koreans would make the trip to Germany for the event. Doubt many could leave their salary jobs. |

Yes. Ajuma, were you watching the same match I was? The back 3 for Korea looked very suspect at times.
I thought Korea were a bit lucky to take maximum points. Against a better-quality side, I don't think the result would have been the same. For me, it looked like the Korean team of old (with the exception of Park Ji-sung ... class player). Blasting away from distance, sailing the ball 6 meteres over the bar and some absolutely diabolical finishing, especially from Cha Doo-ri. That guy couldn't finish his dinner.
I must say it was nice to listen to English commentary on StarSports. When some muppet had a go from 30 yards only to put it 10 yards over the bar, instead of the usual "Shoooooting!", the English commentary was a bit more succinct: "What a waste." |

Totally agree- the strange thing was that when someone got the ball 20 yards out, with defenders all over the place, people in the crowd where shouting
"Shoot! Shoot!"
Then gasping as if it was really close as it sailed into row "Z" |

I heard North Korea played Iran in some Asian cup finals in Pyongyang...the NK's lost and freaked on the players and wouldn't even let the Iranians back on their bus.  |

It was a WCQF not an Asian cup game. (I assume you are talking about the game last night). |

The Uzbeks showed us just why there shouldn't be four or five(possible through play off) Asian teams in the world cup. Should we guarantee the winners of the league in the Finnish league a place in the group stages of the champs league every year? It's pathetic. How can so many quality European teams inevitabely fail to qualify when at the same time Korea's most difficult opponents were teams like the Uzbeks, and Kuwait. These teams would all fail (miserabley) to qualify from groups like this,
1 Holland
2 Czech Republic
3 Romania
4 Finland
5 Macedonia
6 Armenia
7 Andorra
Possibly the Czechs and certainly the Romanians would not qualify for Ger
many if this group finished the same way. If Korea had to play these teams on home and away basis here are my predictions for the match results,
Holland - h) Lose a) Lose
Czechs - h)Lose a) Lose
Romania - h) Draw or lose a) Lose
Finland - h) Win or draw a) Lose
Macedonia - h) Win a) Lose or draw
Armenia - h) Win a) Draw or win
Andorra - h) Win a) Win
We can be sentimental and suggest that a world cup isn't the same without all the continents bening represented, or like me, you could genuinely want to see the best 32 teams in the world participating. Not Asian teams with inflated rankings, and easy qualifying routes. A joke. |

Definitely see your point, but how often have supposed minnows come away with a shock result against those old guard teams? Fact is there are no cast-iron, practical ways to determine who the best 32 teams in the world are once every 4 years- any system is a compromise, and 4 teams from asia really isn't that many. |

Shocks do happen but largely as a result of variables such as home crowd adavantage, dubious refeering, and fatigue in the big teams. Korea just about deserved a quarter finals berth in the last world cup, but their QF victory against Spain was one of the most controversial matches I have seen in all of the years I have followed football. Spain had two legitimate goals chalked off (the third goal that was dissallowed was less controversial). I would like to see all of the minnows) like the Maldives, and San Marino, all play each other in their respective continental zones before a bigger round containing the big guns. (like the FA cup prelimanaries). That would reduce the size of the qualifying tables for a start. Maybe each European group could be reduced to teams of 4 or 5. The winners of each group in Europe could go through, and the runners up could then play off against other Asian teams too. So, we could have the Czechs or Romanians playing off against Korea or Saudi Arabia instead (this round would be seeded too).

These teams play in groups of three on a home and away basis, after which the winners of these groups join the bigger European teams in first round proper. (groups of 4 or 5). The winners of these groups go straight through, and the runners up play in two legged playoffs against 3/4 Asian teams, and 3 African teams. Only one Asian and African team go through, but the rest must play off against European teams if they want to get to Germany. That way, if Korea did make it they might have to play off against Romania. This guarantees at leats one difficult game for Korea on a home and away basis. |
