Hello there,
I am new to the forum and this is my first post. I am not yet in Korea, but have been looking at vacancies starting mid-April.
I am looking at a job offer from POSCO in Gwangyang. Has anyone worked for them before?
If you have PLEASE PM me as I got a few questions about the job before I sign up.
If you know anything generally about working for POSCO please also feel free to comment. I think I've got a couple of days to decide so PM me now!

my friend worked for them and didn't have a very good experience. it is really important that you make your students happy, or they will replace you without warning. |

Ok lets clarify a bit. I have seen some posts up saying about how great the POSCO gig is. I got this offer of a contract through an out-sourcing agent to teach adults at the steel works. Problem is I can't see whats so great about it. The hours are 9am-6pm, the wage is standard, there is no sick pay, no pre-paid ticket. I have to do a curriculum myself - and email it to them every week; there is no mention of any textbooks or anything (and I havn't taught s'*t before), no mention of how I get to the place once I get in country, and no mention of the place in the contract for that matter!
On the up side I get a single studio and teach adults. Wheres this great posco gig everyone is on about?

I didn't like the POSCO deal. Big Brother was always watching. If the ajummas saw you in town during work hours - even during lunch time -they'd call your boss and report you, even if you had permission. Everybody was in your business. The grounds are nice and there are parks and and golf driving ranges, but I'll take my freedom any day. |

Thanks heeps for your advice guys, I rekon I will just forward them my 'amended' contract'; if they accept great! if not there are so many gigs going I will just get another with much better terms and a much more social contract.
Cheers for your help guys, hope to meet up with you in country.

The "good" POSCO jobs are actually in Pohang, where the POSCO factory is, and the POSEF (POSCO educational foundation) is located. POSEF runs the show, Jechul highschool, middleschool, POSTECH university, and I believe, the POSCO english program. Although, there are rumors that they're gonna go private, meaning a seperate company will operate the english program, and no more high POSCO salary or benifits. Basically it'll be like working for any other hakwon.
That's probably what's going on with this lackluster contract you're talking about. Don't count on anything great in Gwangyang. If I were to take a POSCO job, I'd want to take it in Pohang, where the big boys roll, where the beer flows like wine, and where the infamous Chicken Man resides.
Whatthefunk knows what I'm talking about. |

Having just moved to Gwangyang and having met some of the local teachers here who work for POSCO, they are having a ball. Most have been here for 3 plus years. They work at the high school and middle school. Personally I like the place, but I work at a hogwan. |
