I overslept and didn't have time to put any makeup on to cover the two zits that had popped up during the night. At work one of the Korean teachers gave me a pitying look and said "Awww....do you have chicken pox?"

When I first came to Korea I worked in a hagwon full of senior level businessmen and CEO's. I was teaching grammar and I guess it got too boring for this one CEWO type; he raised his hand and asked me if I could tell him how to make love to a woman.

You shouldn't take it literally. When Koreans talk about "pure blood" they're talking about maintaining patrilineal lineage. Women, once married, become a part of her husband's househould and her husband's lineage. Therefore, marriage to a foreigner is considered terminus a quo. The whole basis of Korean neo-confucianism is rooted in this concept of kinship, or "blood" relationships. In other words, your blood -- or your connection with your ancestors -- is everything. It's like a credit history, so to speak, regardless of whether it be good or bad. In a fatalistic society, like Korea's, your "blood", or your ancestry, says who you are and who you will become.

Therefore, knowing one's "blood" is the quintessence of being Korean, and is a major concern of patriarchial society concerned with the disposition of their kin.

That rationale makes no sense. If the father loses the daughter's line through marriage anyway, why should it matter whether it's to a Korean husband or not?

Not to mention the fact that thousands and thousands don't know their ancestry these days. Think of all the ones with slave or other low-born ancestry. They don't know and don't want to advertise it if they do.

I once had a cab driver who told me he wanted a western girlfriend because with a Korean girl you only get sex twice a month. Then he asked me if I would date him...

Probably last year when i was standing at a urinal doing my business and some adjossi beside me started staring in amazement at my bearded throat clogger.

Instead of being embarrased that I caught him checking out my gear, he instead gave me the thumbs up followed my a heart felt "Gwoood."

If i stuck around for another minute i'm pretty sure he would have tried to give me a high five.

a very uncomfortable conversation with a manager about his erection problems and why I should buy my Dad ginseng as it would give him <stiff arm gesture> which would please my Mother.

This was then followed by requests for me to buy him some viagra when I was back home, and a lengthy explanation as to why western men should not date korean women- the extra length makes them ill apparently.

Yeah, he's a pervert.

I signed my contract with the president of the university standing over me. I stood up and shook his hand. He promptly said "I hope you work hardly for us." and I replied, "Yes, sir".
