Seoul Offers Counseling Service for Foreigners
The Seoul metropolitan government has launched a free counseling service by phone to help ease the difficulties English-speaking foreigners encounter while living and working here.
Officials said the ``Help Line'' service will be offered by foreign volunteers from 9:30 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
This service is a developed version of a similar service that the Foreigner's Community Service (FOCUS), a noncommercial foreign volunteers' group, has offered in Seoul. General information and advice on living in Seoul such as leisure activities, education and shopping will be given through the phone counseling service, according to officials.
The service is part of the city government's efforts to make the capital more foreigner-friendly. Last month, the city government opened a 24-hour hotline providing free medical counseling to foreigners.
Seoul City has also been operating the Seoul Help Center in City Hall on similar purposes. Legal counseling and a number of job opportunities are available at the center.
The city government has proposed the central government ease regulations on setting up schools for foreigners to meet educational needs of foreigners here.
Seoul is set to establish a foreign school in Hannam-dong by 2006, while an international kindergarten will be set up for foreign children in the Kangnam-gu, southern Seoul, next year.
To use the phone counseling service, call 02-797-8212. |

What about psychological counselling for the emotional scars people suffer living here? I don't think any korean telephonist would be able to relate to what many foreigners go through. |

Agree there!! Most teachers can't comprehend each other, let alone Korean Government designated advisors. |

Therapist: Why have you come see me?
Teacher: It's the pressure and stress of living in Korea, I don't think I can take it anymore...the shoving, spitting, the bad breath, constant noise pollution...it's so dirty here...my skin has gone bad - I can't breathe well because my lungs are full of soot from the exhaust of those diesel buses...
Therapist: Why did you come to Korea?
