| poker player, great avatar. Is that you doing the gymnastics? Actually, I want to know what made that teacher so good? What was it in her approach/rapport with those kids that made her so successful ? |

Many, many recruiters dropped me like a hot potato when they got around to asking my birthdate. I guess that must mean my photo looks younger than my actual age.
I was worried since I had made definite plans regarding taking a job in Korea based on the assurances of friends over there that I could definitely find a job there. So, then I started "carpet bombing" the greater Seoul area with my resume and picture (not desperate enough to try the provinces yet). I'll be starting there May 2 if all goes according to plan (a good caveat to add when talking about the hagwon industry in Korea, I understand). Best of luck. |

Yeah, that's me working out after a heavy night of soju 
What I thought made her so good was just the fact that her whole demeanour for some reason (her age was definitely part of it) was so so serene and likeable. She had great patience, wit and a vitality that was amazing. It was her willingness to be in Korea teaching at her age that was surprising to all, yet she always seemed surprised when younger teachers asked her about it. My fondest memory of her ability to deal with unruly people is when some other eflers were out of control in a hof 1 nite, she went over to their table and quietly said "fortunately you'll be sober tomorrow, unfortunately you'll be remembered by everyone in here as a group of immature North American adolescents." If I'd said that, I would've probably got popped but they just looked at her and left a few minutes later. No question she knew how to use her age to her benefit.
Finally, she was always prepared. She told me she never once went into a classroom without an objective. She also told me that she thought that many of the younger eflers had no respect for the concept of work ethic and felt that this is why many of them came here in the first place.
BTW, I sent her a copy of this thread and asked her to come on and comment. But she's too busy preparing to go to Indonesia to assist in relief efforts there. When I asked he if she was going to slow down soon, she said -yes, after she turns 70 next year |
