You guys reckon Korean baseball will ever catch up with Japanese baseball in terms of the quality it exports? Korea can't be that far behind. the Matsuis, Suzuki, and a couple pitchers are the only ones who've really "made it" in MLB, as I recall. |
Yeah..Korea can be that far behind. The difference between the Japanes players in the majors and the Koean ones are where they've played. The Korean players in the majors (Hee-Sop Choi, Chan-ho Park, Byung -hyun Kim et al) never played in the Korean pro league and went straight to America after college(Choi, BK,and Seo played for the Korean national team). The Japanese guys are so much better initially because they played so many years in the Japan pro leagues. The Koreans who have tried to make the jump to the bigs (from the Korean pros)failed miserably and ended up in Japan or back in Korea. You only have to go to watch a couple games before you see it's pales in comparison to Japanese or American pro baseball.
I really think Choi has the potential to be good. He's still young and has a lot of room to improve. I think Park Chan-Ho also has (had?) potential but is a headcase and tries too hard to be perfect. BK is just a headcase. My favorite Korean player is Seo Jae-Wong... he's underratedand as good as most when he's on. Bong Jung-Keun is ok, and will get to play cuz he's a pretty good lefty. |

Yes, Kim, and I imagine most Korean players in the majors, probably does isolate himself from the rest of the team. Considering the way "foreigners" in the Korean sports leagues are treated it's not surprising.
Locally, non-Korean athletes are referred to in Korean as "mercenaries." Using such terminology implies that a) they are playing only for the money, not for the love of the game; and b) that they have zero loyalty to their team or league. They are not "our athletes" like Korean players... they are hired help.
Kim and Park and the rest think of themselves along the same lines. They are "mercenaries," outsiders in MLB who are paid to perform a service and ideas such as "team chemistry" and "camaradarie" are alien to them. They don't try to fit in because they believe it's impossible.
Of course, I think that's bullshit. MLB has beecome quite internationalized over the years, so I imagine most players have no problems whatsoever with working with players from any country around the globe. But Kim and the others believe otherwise.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- New team, same old problems for Byung-Hyun Kim.
The Texas Rangers spoiled Kim's debut with the Colorado Rockies, battering the newly acquired sidearmer for eight runs on six hits, including a pair of homers, in an 11-7 exhibition win Friday.
Kim, acquired by Colorado from the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, allowed five extra-base hits and retired just one batter before leaving. The Rangers scored 10 runs and sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth.
Woo! that thin air in New Mexico must be killer! |

Here's my take...
1.Now that he's in the mile high city...he'll have no problem putting his own spin on the "mile high salute", where he will be flipping his middle finger more often than not....
2 It won't be long before his poor pitching and constant kimchi farting will stink up the Rockies clubhouse...and he will be on his way home before the year is out to help his hometown Kia Tigers...
My two cents worth.... |

| Hey, Nolan Ryan, my father used to work with the real Nolan Ryan in Texas! A real classy person. I wish I had his rookie card! |
