| I couldn't send it as a video, but it did work as a DVD-Rom and is now on the dvd. Took about 12 minutes to write. Thanks for the help that you did offer. |

Cool. |

| Will it play on one of those universal dvd players you can buy now - the ones that play a whole load of formats? |

Video levels = brightness of video.
When I worked in TV, we had to keep the video within certain parameters. We had scopes and stuff to measure this, and there are rules/FCC laws for TV levels in the USA. If the video was too bright, it would cause funky things to happen on peoples' home TV sets. For example, if the video was too bright, it would cause the screen to "flip" on home TV sets. Also, the speakers would emit a BUZZ sound when the video level was too high (we'd say, "the video is too hot").
Video levels can be too low, also. Black can be too black. Black video at 0% is called, "Superblack." We put superblack behind things we plan to "Key out," for example.
There are electronic engineers who work at the TV stations to control all of this and keep it in spec.
The thing about the internet and home computers is that you can create and play files with crazy levels in them. But when you go to burn them onto a disc or create a file with them, they can do funky things if the levels aren't at least halfway kosher.
The problem I had which was screwing up Nero was when I inserted bright frames to act like camera flashes between several still shots. Nero couldn't deal with it until I lowered the brightness of the still frame. It would create a file, but skip several of the photos after the first flash. See this file for my example, which happens in the beginning of the first news story (it is fixed in this file and works, because I used darker bright stills): http://www.seoulstream.com/images/ydnfinal.wmv
Nero also goes ape if I import a MicrosoftDV.AVI with slow-motion in it (at least slow-mo created by Premiere). I have to export it as either a full uncompressed .avi, or as an .MPEG4 file for Nero to handle it. Something must not be totally right with the MicrosoftDV.AVI codec, which is a shame, because I like that codec when I can work with it.
Oh, forgot to add that you can use Photoshop to check levels of the video (percentage in RGB) and there is a filter for TV in Photoshop which automatically sets the levels safe for you. There's also something like that on the color picker. I forget the name of the filter at the moment, but i'm sure you've seen it. |
Great post Derrek! Lots of good info there. Thanks. |

@ Toby:
So you were trying to make a video disk?
Well, glad you got it sorted. Just one question: Why did you burn a 699MB file to a DVD? Just seems a bit wasteful seeing as a DVD can hold 6 files of that size and it would have fit on a CD-ROM.
Were you aiming to play it on a DVD player? Not sure if it will work out playing it on a DVD player or not. My instinct tells me it won't as it's not a DVD file at all, but then again, perhaps the newer players will want to support these file types just to broaden their appeal.
If they do/will play any .avi file as long as it's on a DVD disk, then that would be very cool.
Perhaps Derrek or Gord can ring in with this info. |

I am techno dumb, as you have probably realised.
The box says that it will only record up to 120 minutes of video stuff. What happens with that - can I record lots more onto one?
Sorry for my inability. |

I think what it means is it can fit 120 minutes of captured video. That is to say, video that has been taken from a camcorder or the like.
Even this however, is misleading, as capturing video in different formats leads to vastly differing file sizes. Capturing (or recording onto the hard drive from a source) in DV (digital video) mode, which entails no loss of quality, creates massive files. 120 minutes in this format would be mad if one were wanting to put it on DVD(s).
The best way to think of DVD-ROMs is that it will hold 4.2~4.5 GB of information, regardless of the file type. So, if you are burning .avi files (which to Nero would not be "create a video disk", but just a UDF fomat DVD) one can typically fit 6 or 7 on a DVD if they are say 700MBx6=4200MB or 4.2GB.
Hope it helps. Derrek and Gord do know a heck of a lot more than me on this issue...they will be of great service in learning about formats. I am more hardware/gaming software than video. |
