Well I hate to go off on a redundant tangent about the axiomatic. But in truth my mere presence inspires madness in Koreans. Like today when I was riding and decided to pause and grant my noble Knightly attention to three small children playing in the street.
I said, "Ode o Cashimnica?"
And all three immediately started laughing like I was an impossibly goofy Bozo.
Then I said "Onionhasayoh" And they resounded anon with joyful giggles. So I said bye to them and rode away muttering to myself, "Silly little punks Christ save 'em."

I could be wrong here, but wasn't one of the (I'm sure bountiful) reasons they were laughing not because your language was ludicrously respectful considering they were just kids?

Yes, I would agree that that would be the reason. Smile

Maybe it had to do with them having no idea what he was saying AND the level of respect. Heck, on the first one, I don't know what he's saying, and I am doing research for my MA in Korean! If it said Od-e or Odi, and what the heck is "cash"?

God forbid waegooks in Korea should derive pleasure in any way. God forbid they should feel amusement at any time over any situation or memory.

True. I feel more comfortable knowing that there are 2 guys walking around with a harmless Star Wars outlook to their surroundings, than if they were 2 of the many paranoid, self-conscious idiots who flip out on innocent Koreans for the dumbest and most obscure reasons like 'I don't need to know the language to know when they are saying bad things about me, cuz I'm a smart guy and I have them all figured out, blah, blah.'

Good for you, guys. Smile

I am not trashing anyone for finding amusement in interactions with Korean kids... but I can't feel it's not reasonable for the kids to think this guys totally weird if his words sound like what he's written...whatever he's trying to say...

and that level of respect? i don't even use that level of respect when I speak to my martial arts instructors (the highest people in my life i normally speak to in Korean). Speaking like that to a tyke... it's just displaying a lack of any attempt to understand how language and culture are intertwined. You can know a word... that doesn't mean it can be used at all times to all people. Or that it can be used the way we use it in English... Not that it can be a foreigners fault for not realizing this at first, also most of the crappy Korean learniing books use ridiculously high levels of speech... ugh! Who do they think foreigners need to talk to? Are we all high powered businessmen? We need to talk to the lady in the restaraunt and the taxi driver and the mother of our student when we bump into them on the street!

Ok let me make this axiomatic fact facile for you of more brilliant two speak lingos:

I R00lz Jeju! Do NOT question my DIVINE RIGHT - THe Right of KINGS -The ichors of Akhilleus and Caculain gushes through mine great good Fat Heart. RESPECT MY ATHORATAH!

All children here are under my matchless swordarm's protection. The hobbling ole peasant women with vegetable baskets strapped to their backs give me joyous smiles for they know their Lord is present and no harm will come to them whilst I reign. The middle school girls laugh at me and go mad when I shake their outstretched hands. And the teenage boys say very handsome when they see mine stately self march decorously through Emart.

̽׷Ʈŷֵγõγ õ  ͽ ݷ ݷ

As you can see above my students know what is the truth about me. REad it Understand it Do it!

And maybe some day I will learn proper levels of Korean address.
