The idea that Hollywood pumps out nothing worthwhile is a pretty common statement.

The same can be said of film here-

Film is ultimately a business and is treated as such in both Korea and the USA. Last year, we got a few films that were very original in the west- SIDEWAYS leaps to mind. Granted they usually come from indie filmakers, but they do exist. Most of the stuff that is released isn't very good there or here. Kim Ki Duk, the award winning Korean director still can't find financing here- because his films haven't done well financially! If you look at the Korean companies, the big ones all generally play it very safe- just like the west. The fact that a few scripts have sold...well, let's see how many get made. Every year hundreds of scripts get purchased, few get made.

Contrary to popular belief Korean cinema isn't filled with indie renegades... How many high school movies have come out in the last few years... High School Sex comedy with Boys/ High School Sex comedy with girls/ College sex comedy/ Undercover gangster in High school/ Undercover cop in High school/ High school girl gets married...

Any of these sound familiar?

I got to speak with a Korean director at a party one night...and after a few drinks he told me the feature (the one BIG success I knew he had had and that I had just complimented him on- kissing his ass-sure, why not?)...that one big success, he rolled his eyes and said was nothing more than a ripoff of Friends.

"I can well imagine writers in Korea basically sign away everything for their shot.

That said, at least it looks good on their resume and raises their profile."

-I agree with this. Unfortunately, the writer, is the lowest guy on the totem pole. The first to get blamed for a film that fails and the last to get credit.

But as anyone who has worked at a company for a long time without a salary bump...credit will only take you so far.

Profiles are nice... but Peter Tork (drummer for The Monkees) worked as a waiter a few years after the TV show and prior to their reunion tour.

Profiles are nice if you are compensated accordingly!

----------------------------
There is an old joke: Did you hear about the dumb actress? She slept with the screenwriter.

What is funny to me is just watching all the guys 'borrow' from one another and NOT give credit where it is due. And then watch on boards like this where people immediately call them on it!

Just a thought, but if indeed the movies here are so much better as compared to Hollywood, why the screen quota system?

To save their industry? And what is the point if they are mimicking the same stories? As we have already seen, the money ultimately ends up in just a few pockets anyway.

Other than the very few that were given extra exposure through the award shows, name 5 off the top of your head.

Yeah, I stopped Hollywood movies except certain blockbusters years ago. I have no reason why certain turkeys were made -- 13 going on 30, Catwoman, What a Girl Wants and the like. It is a business and I can see that studios want a return on their investment but man, many Hollywood films seem little different than longer TV shows.

I am waiting for Star Wars Episode III, Batman Begins and Superman Returns, but outside of these flicks, Hollywood just sucks. They also for the most part don't know how to remake films, either (ie Shall We Dance, Open Your Eyes/Vanilla Sky, Birdcage/La Cage Aux Folles, etc).

By the way, I've heard that Cameron Diaz has been mentioned for My Wife is a Gangster.

why do people seem to think that Hollywood has just started being a money making machine? I've read it a few times lately, as though we've lost track of the great shining artistic beacon that was American cinema.
Surely there have always been a few mavericks making 'cinema' (Scorsese, Spike Jonze) whilst the Spielbergs and James Cameron's make eye-candy to go with your popcorn?

Preston Sturges- Great writer. Total indie, Reportedly sold a script for a buck on the condition they would let him direct!

Actually I think it has more to do with an intolerance for subtitles and if it isn't English it isn't right - at least as far as the general american/canadian public is concerned.

Sorry, but how can you not know that some of the best Canadian movies aren't even in English...and are enjoyed by Canadian?

Well, he is right. People don't like to read subtitles. The best movies in Canada are French movies but so few ever even make it to Ontario theaters.

DUDE! you need to stop watching movies like Harold and kumer go to white castle and WHITE CHICKS!!
stop looking at your local cinema for the lastest releases!
stop looking on the internet for the films released by powerful distributors and perhaps you will find some memorable movies..

5 off the top of my head?
not a problem!!

not the oscar ones right?

they are not memorable?

sorry I dont watch films like dude wheres my car and white chicks which is maybe why you are saying hollywood doesnt make any great movies!
but if you look.. you will find some gems out there!

hollywood doesnt make any good films??! WHATEVER!!!

5 which are great movies which are not mainstream

The ballad of jack and rose
The woodsman
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (kinda mainstream now)
The Machinist
Kinsey

memorable???? as in gone with the wind? or casablanca?
if this is what you are meaning.. then tell me any country which does so!
but for great rentals! solid performances, great entertainment!
hollywood is still pumping out great movies..
of course there are many foreign films that come out each year which are FANTASTIC movies.. but on a scale! hollywood has it beat!
if you want Super fast, high paced, Action! hollywood can deliver!
you want intense dramatic story, character based driven films! hollywood delivers!
you want stupid slap stick humour funny hollywood delivers!

exactly what are you saying Hollywood doesnt make any good films?
you mean for your personal taste?
or what.. please elaborate..!!!
becuase saying hollywood is dead is just absurd.

what do you want?

i don't think the remakes will be any good, but i think they'll be good enough and different enough for americans that no one will really care.

really, just subtitle it and show it, that would be a LOT better.

and perhaps ppl don't remember 'crouching tiger, hidden dragon' which made big bucks as a subtitled film.

the blair witch project and run lola run were small films with no big name star power that got a lot of recognition.

the same right now with 'bend it like beckham' and 'bride and prejudice'...
