The same thing happened to me but in reverse. I was putting in a new, normal CD-rom (my old one went kaput!) to go alongside my DVD burner. After I plugged in the CD-rom the DVD burner wouldn't work. I tried all the slave/master switches to no avail.

I then thought to re-install the DVD burner software that came with it. Success!!

Sounds like a Bios issue.

You have to hit the DEL key during boot and get into the bios. Then set the order of which devices boot first.

Would it help if you just ditched your CD Rom drive and replaced it with the DVD?

You know about setting the jumper pins correctly on the back of the drives, and making sure you connect the (big, flat) data cable in the right order I presume?

And you did connect them both on the correct IDE ribbon, yes? They should be on the secondary line; that is, not the primary IDE (the colored one usually).

As well, the ribon has a red )or black) stripe on one side...this should be in, as should the red line on the power molex plug.

Not sure it's a BIOS issue, but going in there will tell you if it's at least being registered in the BIOS. If so, then it's a
Windows (probably driver) issue. If not, then it's the connection or the CD-ROM drive problem. Check those jumper pins carefully...I often confuse them still.

When you get past the error message, what do you see in "My Computer"? Any drive icon for it, or still only the HDD and the old CD-ROM? Is it seen in the device manager? Perhaps with a red "X" or yellow exclamation mark?

this is what I have done so far..

I have connected the DVD BURNER on the same IDE cable as the CDROM
the other IDE cable holds my two HDDS.. so this one has one free slot..

Its the second one on the 2nd IDE Cable which I have plugged it into.
now.
I switched the DVDBurner to slave on the back of the DVD burner. (the pin)

now with both connected I cant load windows,.,
unplug the DVD and then I can load again..

the very first thing I tried I might have had it.. but freaked out when the CDrom drive wouldnt open and unplugged the burner,,

but I just connected them together and it worked.. well in device it read both my drives.. now its only reading one of them..

so if plug my dvd burner in with the cdrom.. it only reads the DVD burner

ok I am not at home right now so I cant tell you the error message..
thats where I am at now..
