I just moved to Gangnam. I found Walmart, CostCo and all the little convenience stores, but where are the regular grocery stores? Lotte mart, Carrefour, other locals? I'm looking for a real grocery store...hopefully within walking distance of Kyobo Tower, which is about where I live.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by "real" groceries....

Last time I was in Walmart and Costco I saw lots of groceries and they looked pretty real to me.

There's no Carrefour in Gangnam BTW.
There's a Lotte dept store at Hanti station. They probably have a basement supermarket.

I think you could probably walk to Kim's Club at Express Bus Terminal. The B1 floor is a gigantic supermarket--fresh vegs, lots of Western food, even Leffe Blond beer, which is why I go there.
Also Lotte at Hanti, the above poster is correct that there's a supermarket in the B1.
Also Hyundai Department store at Samsung, B1.
Star Super at Dogok station, NE corner, in the basement behind Starbucks, is super-expensive but has a great western selection.
Galleria Apkujung is the other big one that I know of, but far for you.

There's a new Emart up by Yangae intersection and across the road is the biggest supermarket in Korea Hanaro Mart. Hanaro mart is wicked but went to the new Emart and it's got it's charms too. The problem is there can at times be a mean traffic jam at the intersection.

Hanaro Mart is huge but I found it a very Korean supermarket. I don't think I saw a western-style product there at all. Nothing wrong with that of course, if you're just getting basics.

On the contrary Hanaro has a stack of foreign food however the problem is it's scattered haphazardly around the store and difficult to find. I haven't really bought much foreign food for years except pasta, cheese and peanut butter. Meat and vegetables are universal and Hanaro mart has huge amounts of both.

To clarify: What I meant by "real" is not-a-convenience-store and not Walmart...and actually, I don't mind a "very Korean" supermarket. I go to Hannam for Western food stuff.

Sounds like Kim's Club, Emart and Hanaro Mart are exactly what I am looking for. Thanks so much. I'll check them out and if I can't find them, can I PM you guys?

there is a pretty large korean style grocery store across from the renaissance hotel -- on the back streets adjacent to seoulleng station. it's hard to explain how to get there, but the selection is good and there is a nice sauna and, i believe, a swimming pool in the underground complex.
