All foreign workers in Korea will have to have health insurance starting 2006, if the National Assembly passes a law the governing party proposed yesterday.

Health Insurance for Foreign Workers to Be Compulsory
The government has tried to induce companies employing foreign workers to subscribe to the health insurance. But lots of companies did not follow suit, as they have to pay for half of the insurance premiums of their workers if they do under the law.

A step in the right direction.
However, they'd better stipulate that the insurance be the national scheme. Otherwise, foreign employees will find themselves signed up to worthless private plans to satisfy the new requirements. The bare minimum. Like the sham that my hogwan tried to push on me -- 3 million won maximum coverage? That's a week in the ICU. |

I will believe that when I see it. I was once told, that contacts are offered to foreigners because that is what they want to see. But Koreans will not follow them unless it suits them. Because Koreans rely on a verbal agreement. I will wait and see, this country changes every day. Lets wait and see. |
