Okay I've been here a few weeks now and pretty much have my bearings, so I'm ready to have some fun around Daejon. Anyone have some suggestions of things to do, especially things at night, since I get off work at 9? Also, I live in Sintanjin. Is there anything fun to do in this district? I've seen a couple bars and pool halls, but they are just kinda okay, and usually close to empty when I go.

Also, if anyone wants to meet up some time in Daejon that would be cool, too.

Thanks in advance,
Qinella

I don't know where Sintanjin is exactly....

I also don't know what your idea of fun is. I'm not much into drinking (actually, I seem to have turned into someone with a one-drink limit Embarassed ), and I've also turned into a bit of a homebody in the evenings. One thing you might try if you're a pet lover is going to the doggy cafe (not to be confused with a bosintang restaurant Wink ) and hanging out with the resident dogs and cats while you eat a parfait or drink some coffee. It is located in ൿ near the train station -- if you're interested, I'll try to see if I can figure out the directions more specifically. It closes at 10:30, and going around 9:00 is kind of nice because the pets seem calmer and more apt to curl up in your lap around that time of day. My husband and I take our dog there sometimes, but most customers don't bring their own pets. If you happen to see a rather fetching (yeah right Rolling Eyes ) western woman with a dashing Korean man, that is probably us -- and we're very approachable. Very Happy

The closest nightlife kind of area to you (unless things have changed since I lived there) is Koong Dong, next to Choongnam Nat'l University. The taxi will automatically let you out at Lotteria. Santa Claus (bar) is in the basement of that building. Foreigners often go there. They can give you more information.

haha, the loteris down in kun dong is now gone, but just tell the taxi man you know its gone but just go there anyway, he'll get the message. also, there is ultimate frisbee on sunday afternoons at the government complex park at around 3pm, except if its bloody raining like it is today. santa clause is a great place to hang out on a friday or saturday bnight, or there is down town, which is pretty far. the foriegn bars are j rock, and the zoo and also KOP bar down in donsan dong.

as for other sports like soccer just go to KOP ans ask them about that as that bar is the sponser of the foregn team. there is parks to go to, gareyongson mountain is all good, specially now that the blossums are out. anyway, come down to santa clause bar, let yourself get known and network from there. btw. welcome to daejeon!

I just drove through Sintan-jin yesterday. Your pretty much out in the boonies. My guess is that from where you are to either Eun-Haeng Dong or Gung-dong would take about 1 hour by bus.
I myself am in Songchong-Dong (near Daejeon IC). I live directly across the street from a pretty big "nightlife" area. Lots of restaurants and bars, singing rooms, pool halls, etc... Not sure if that is what your looking for as I havn't seen too many foreigners in this area (3-4) And I've never seen them hanging out in bars or whatever.
Like you I am pretty new to Daejeon myself so I don't have any specific information about where you are located, sorry.

Listen to crazykiwi. He only looks (and sounds and acts) crazy. If you tell any cabbie about the lotteria, he'll get you there even though the restaurant itself is gone.

Daejeon is hosting an ultimate frisbee tourney unlike any you've ever seen. It's a hat tournament, which means ANYone can play. We put all the names in a hat, and pull them out to form teams, so the result is parity, with vets and rookies on every team. The goal is to:
1. Have fun
2. Drink beer
3. Play disc
4. Drink beer and
5. Did I mention beer?

From memory, Sintanjin has a fairly comfortable police station; if you are ever locked up there, say hello from Plastic B. Also my friend owns a car yard in the neighbourhood if you are looking for a cheap Hyundai...

Actually Daejeon is pretty cool if you are into art. There is a decent public art gallery in Dunsandong, and right next door a world class philharmonic orchestra. It is v.cheap (by Western standards) to buy a membership - and it will be a fulfilling experience, trust me.

Also in nearby Gongju is an annual environmental art exhibition, held in the grounds of an early 7th century (606 AD) castle ruins. Artists come from all over the world to make and display art in an absolutely beautiful and unique setting. The exhibition runs from around June or July until October, don't miss it.

PS. Casey's Moon - if someone has just arrived in Korea, don't expect them to be able to read or understand Hangul, you smug idiot, just give a Romanised translation. I mean WE all know just how Korean you are and all...

Once you have a computer at home, you will find that it is a lot easier to meet people. Good luck.

There's www.socius.or.kr - a bunch of people (including me) pushing for more socializing Wink and online on yahoo groups, expatskorea. There are some maps (with various shopping malls/dept. stores) for you to pour over at www.socius.or.kr as well.

There's a new turkish restaurant, fyi! Let's meet and check that out, if you wish. You could also head out to Brickhouse - bar run for/by foreigners in Eunhaeng-dong, or Santa Claus in Gung-dong.
