| Come on, "In the know," put an original source or at least tell us specifically where you heard this. Unless you do that your post sounds like BS. I sure hope it is. |

| Imagine all the fat Wonjangnims out protesting in Kwanghwamoon if it were true, and forcing all their employees to come out with them too. |

| Hmmm. If we have rumors here on this board, dont you think the wonjonims would too? Say 5% or even 10% of the foreigners could get this new E2, that would put the other 90% of the waygooks out in the cold and their hogwons in trouble of losing a competitive edge with the schools that could retain their foreigners. Wouldnt we already be seeing protests on atleast a small scale? Its not as if this is a big secret if its true. "In the know" somehow got a hold of this info. Dont you think some directors have acquaintances "on the inside"? |

My goodness, what would all the hogwon moms do if their boyfriends, er...favorite teachers packed up and headed out of the Land of Morning Calm????
The solution best suited for Korea is possibly based on the Japanese method (oops, don't tell 'em that!)...
1. Require personal interviews and demonstrations either in the home country or here in Korea, at the prospective teacher's expense. 3 days in another city, or better yet in Korea, would weed out many of the undesirables and unmotivated.
2. Alot of the institutes in Japan strongly "recommend" the teacher get at least a TEFL certificate while employed, on the teacher's own time and expense...again, weed out the unmotivated and non-serious prospects
3. DO NOT PAY AIRFARE TO KOREA!! "shit, man, I ain't gonna pay no damn airfare over there just to take a chance."
4. Enforce the labor laws, close the disreputable hogwons and you are half way there my friend.
Just a suggestion...any input is wholeheartedly welcome |

I've done a bit of trawling of google but haven't found anything. It certainly seems out of step with stuff like this to get rid of most of the teachers teaching here.
Surely the easiest way to weed out the illegal teachers woul be to get rid of that 6 month canadian tourist visa which is way too long imho. Problem is that it's a reciprocal agreement so the koreans will lose their rights to be tourists in canada for 6 months. Also they might want to start asking people who continually come and go on toursit visas. Surely if you've entered the rok on two or three tourist visas they might raise a red flag somewhere.
I don't have an over inflated view myself. I know that in the end korea could turf us all out tomorrow. We are all quests here . Always have a back up plan/money because our jobs here could vanish tomorrow.
I can't imagine that many directors would be happy with this. There is an entire industry built up around us in addition to service industries etc. but in the end we could all be ejected tomorrow. |

To the above list I'd like to add my own personal per peeve:
Like Japan - work visas are owned by the individual teacher and not the school. |

So all the illegal teachers in Korea are Canadian? 6 months is a long time I agree.... every other country has 30 days? |

| Had my wife call immigration. No one knew anything about it. I have to extend my E2 anyway and they said just bring in the usual stuff. |

I think the states is the lowest at 30 days. Most other places it's 90. I just think that 180 is a bad policy as far as preventing illegal teaching goes. |

| Im Canadian and I say cut the period down. 180 days is WAY to long. Most illegal teachers probably ARE Canadians since its so easy for them to do. They should cut it down to a month. 30 days is enough to find a job if you come in on a tourist visa. And you dont really need 30 days to see the country. Its kinda small. Lets face it, most of the people on tourist visas dont even get out of Seoul. 30 days is enough, though maybe it should be 15. |

It will never happen as much as Koreans don't like evil illegal teachers far more of them like visa free travel to other places and most of these visa free stays are recperiocal agreements. You can bet your bottom dollar that most koreans would rather put up with foreign teachers illegally teaching here so that they can keep their visa free travel and go give birth in another coutnry and little min-su gets no military service and cheaper education in the developed english speaking country of their choice (except aussie0 |

I know all that. Its just something that SHOULD happen. It wont but it should. They should just put tracking devices on all those with tourist visas and monitor their movements. Maybe put a bug into those anklets and listen in. |

Why not just ask that foreign tourist why they have 6 consecutive 6 month stays in Korea?
Seriously, I know TOO many who work here illegally and just breeze through immigration.
And before you ask, they are both American and Canadian. (actually a good mix of both to tell the truth) |

I think that they will enforce the following requirements:
You must be Canadian or American
You must be white
You must be under 35 years old
You must be good looking |
