Hey,
My kids hate practicing their reading and I dont blame them, it's pretty dry. Any ideas of ways to make it more fun for them and something to look forward to??? I'm gonna make them act stuff out (such as the animals in the story) b/c I know they like that but any further ideas would be greatly appreciated. Cheers. |

Get a big fluffy dice and roll it. If it lands on 5, count around to five children... ask that child to read a paragraph (or two) and then child can then roll the dice. I found that all of my students (kindy & elementary) loved it, and loved teasing the child whose turn it was to read next... they all got right into it. |

Use weird voices and encourage the kids to do the same.
Hold your nose closed while you read and then get the kids to do the same.
Have them hold the book upside down or sideways.
Have them read in little groups where the first kid reads the first sentence, the second one reads the second one, and so on.
Try to get them to say it as fast as possible and then as slowly as possible.
Find a piece of music that doesn't have words and have them try to read to that rhythm.
Have them read like normal, but clap or stomp at the same time that they read any word that starts with a vowel, or the letter s, so on.
If you have any puppets, have the kids make the puppets do the reading.
Record them reading and then play it back to them. (only do this after they are quite good at whatever it is they are reading)
Ummm....that's all I can think of right now. |

Blackheart, this is the first I've heard of kindergarten English students "practicing their reading."
What kind of material do you use? |

We are doing Scholastic Reader Level 1. They are korean age 7 so they are at the end of their kindergarten careers. I choose between a few books the school offers me based on my perception of their reading ability. Right now it's "The Classroom Pet", joy, joy... |

Do they actually know how to read (phonics and word recognition) or are they just memorising the story that you read to them? If they are actually reading, it surprises me that they hate it. My kindy kids who can read love stories, and love reading. The ones who don't know how to read yet will listen to stories, but they need a lot of encouragement to repeat what I say, and sometimes seem bored by story time. |

Good point actually....there is one that can phonetically read and likes it. Two others can phonetically read and they don't like it at all. The 3 others are just memorizing the words.
Today I combined the dice idea with making them act out the page. They liked it except one kid got really stressed and upset b/c the dice never landed on him...So I guess next time when I give them a fun activity with reading I can't let the dice decide who gets the turn... |
