A side note Polly: When you apply for the ARC you can request that they deliver it. There's a small charge, but well worth it.

Why are teachers in Korea? Because there are one, two or three aspects of Korea they find uniquely appealing and desireable, yet many rightly find the bulk of the place inhumane.

I'm in Korea because:

1. The language kicked my donkey the first time I tried, and I'm not about to give up that easily.
2. The woman I love lives here.
3. I like Korea.
4. I can make enough money for grad school.

I came here because:

1. I had been out of school for two years, and worked two jobs just trying to survive...not too fun. Mad

2. I saw that my job wasn't going anywhere, and I wanted to go back to school to make myself more marketable.

3. Then, I realized that I could never go back to school b/c I had no money...could barely pay bills, let alone pay off 20,000 in student loans, and sock away money for another degree. Shocked

4. I wanted to travel...and see the world, and possibly see if teaching was the career for me, and Korea provided the best place for me to come and try that out. Smile

Now I am here, paying off loans and credit cards faster than I ever could have, and am starting to put away money for school.

I have already visited a number of countries...and I am glad that I came, no regrets. Of course, I have many days where I wish I could be at home(Korea is by no means an easy place to live, especially out in the sticks)....but there is no other place else that affords me this lifesyle at the moment. Very Happy

I don't consider myself in anyway as part of 'community' with other efl teachers in Korea. How exactly do you feel we are a 'community'? How do we commune? Do you automaticaly feel some closeness or kindship everytime you meet another foreigner?

Shocked Sorry to hear you feel that way. Here in Daejeon where I happen to live, I feel very much part of the foriegn community. Maybe the person who said that, didnt feel part of YOUR community, but part of the one s/he shares with the other expats in the town where s/he resides? I certainly would stick my neck out for any of my mates i have met here, as for random waygooks, why would i? These people here do feel part of something, maybe not a community in your books, but certainly something. I dont automatically feel anything to anyone just because they are foriegn, i feel it after having talked with them, sat down and had a few beers with them, and hey, if i want to be their mate, then i will, and yes, that is the closeness i want when im this far from home. will i get that from anywhere else? i dont think so.

Why do people work in Korea?

It's a global community these days. There's no need for anyone to feel they should live in their home country. I can work in any country that gives me a comfortable living. Korea does that. I don't need to go into psychology to work this one out.

Do You Need Therapy?

Selected Quotation:
Living today is more difficult and stressful than ever before, said a couple of therapists when questioned on the matter. We live in an era where the escalating divorce rate, alcoholism, anxiety and depression affect the psyche of every Korean in some way or the other. Just about every Korean suffers from soul-deadening mental, physical or emotional tiredness.

Do they need therapy? They need sleeeeeeeeeeep!!!!!!!!!!!
