If your potential new boss is such a penny pincher that he doesn't want to pay 40,000 won a month for his half of your health insurrance, don't sign.
Simply put, health insurrance is peace of mind. I wouldn't negotiate on that when coming to a foreign country. |

I had pretty much the same agreement with my boss and it worked out fine. I saved about $500 for the year, but I don't get sick often and I certainly don't run to the doctor as often as the average Korean. I didn't get insurance and I only went to the doctor once; the cost was 20 000 won plus medicine. My boss paid it. If something serious had happened, I would have acquired insurance at that time. Health Insurance in Korea can be backdated/applied for afterwards. My friend was in the same situation as me and when she ended up in the hospital for a week; she got insurance then and got the insurance discount for the entire hospital stay.
Your boss is trying to save money, but it shouldn't hurt your health care. Of course, this all depends on how comfortable you are not having insurance. It doesn't worry me, so I asked to not be covered at my current job (a public school) too. |
Are you a recruiter?
It makes no sense what you wrote. When you want to join the plan you are charged by the government for time you have neen in Korea without health insurance. So there are no benefits whatsoever to joing late because guess what, you will end up having to pay for the time you werent covered. In my case, I didnt get insurance my first year, I had it in my second. In my third year, when I wanted to join, I was told I had to pay for the entire year I was not covered. Except then its a large chunk that has to be paid at once. If this boss is being cheap now, how will he react when he has to pay hundreds of thousands of won to get you signed up? Dude, YOU HAVE NO CLUE. STOP GIVING BAD ADVICE. |

Would it be advisable to get one year's travel insurance for a one year contract? Anybody done that?
I'm asking on behalf of a friend heading in in a couple of weeks. She'll have to consult her travel agent for details of exactly what it covers o/s but I'm just wondering about people's experiences.
School-provided insurance or travel insurance? Any thoughts on savings or effectiveness of options? |
