Anyone currently working or has worked in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do province? I've signed a contract for a job in Gwangju, assuming it was the one in Jeollanam-do province but have just noticed it's not! I thought i was going to the 5th largest city in Korea...now i'm worried it's going to be a small place with nothing to do.

Would appreciate any info anyone has on this town. Confused

My best friend lives there. He does nothing else there. I don't think there is anything to do other than live. There is not even a subway station, yet. It is not too far from Bundang, though.

Hi kangnamdragon,

Would your best friend strongly recommend not living there then?

I've spent a fair deal of time up there and I'd live there. Check out those other threads, but depending on your personality, I think you'd come to enjoy the relative peace and serenity Gwangju offers. Plus, it's pretty convenient to Seoul and Bundang.

Hi Animalbirdfish,

Does it have any bars/restaurants for the weekends? Did you notice many other foreigners there? It's just that i don't want to have to rely on going to Seoul each time i want to socialise.

Cheers

My best friend is Korean. He lives there with his wife and grandmother and drives to Seoul every day for work. I could not compare his experience to yours. It takes him 30 minutes to drive to his office in Seoul.

I would see no problem living there because I think it is good for someone to not be around a lot of foreigners during his or her first year. But that depends upon what type of person you are. That opinion is relative to my situation at the time I came here way back then. Times have changed. Basically, it is a new area. It would have advantages and disadvantages.

You seem to imply that you would only socialize with white people. Why not meet the Koreans in that area?
I do know there is a bus from there directly to Kangnam.

It's not that i only want to socialise with foreigners but it would be nice to have the option of being able to chill at the weekend with a beer and be able to speak english.
