I turn on my computer and thats what it says. 
So how do I resolve this one?? |

First check the BIOS settings (DEL on boot) and see what the "boot" device is. Change it to your hard drive if it's something different.
Short of this, did you get a virus? Anything unusual happen the last time you shut it down? How old is the comp? What OS? Anything you can tell us about the hard drive? Make? Model? |

forget the hard-drive and OS details
DO CHECK the ribbon cable, as well - sometimes they get loose, or the connectors get oxided - pull it out (a BIT - no bad pun intended), move up n down on the pins, and push back on FIRMLY. |

Are you kidding? An IDE connector come loose?! Man...it takes some real work to unplugthose suckers when you want to...never mind them just "coming loose".
Oxided? Wow....first time for everything I guess. Both is words and theories.  |

there is vibration in a PC caused by h/ds, CD drives and fans,
and physical movement caused by the fans and thermal expansion. If you ever care to read a good tech service manual, they always recommend re-seating chips - coz they do come loose. So yes Dorothy, connectors also come 'loose'. No, they do not come off - but "re-seating" them is a good idea.
Oxidation? - yes it DOES happen.
I guess with my 26 years in IT, and 15 years in electronics I have seen a darn sight more than you. |

Thermal expansion causing an IDE cable to come loose. That's rich...as if the vibration theory weren't enough....stop it man....you're killin' us here...
This dude's a sock if I've ever smelled one.
You know, I bet strapping a PC to a paint can shaker couldn't loose an IDE connector. |

Them's some pretty harsh words towards a guy that has helped many of us through some tricky times with our computer. Demo's always been awesome when I've asked him questions; and I've seen him help out hundreds of other posters as well - just read the forum, you'll see.
You, on the other hand, have done nothing compared to Demo. On this forum you're ill-mannered and unproven. If you're not a sock, then you're a troll. Get lost. I hope that's CONTSTRUCTIVE enough for you. |

I think ken knows his stuff and he does have some pretty far-out theories...for some reason he's got it in for me though.

Believe it or not, I've also had this be the message when a floppy or CD was left in the drive and the BIOS was set to look for those before the hard drive. Sometimes the user then does the forehead-smack and sometimes they don't.
Demo, I gotta say, though, that having a physical disconnection from the hard drive is the usual cause in my line of work for that error message. If the computer gets smacked around a little-- say, from it being at the user's kicking feet-- the hard drive can get unseated or a cable can become unplugged. I realize you would never treat a computer that way, but some of us can be a bit clumsy. |

Well, I am more than surprised. In all of my building experience, those IDE connectors could be hurled around like a lasso and not come out. They are pretty solid....the last thing I would have thought.
Perhaps SATA connections...that I could believe easier.
Anyways, you learn something new everyday. I guess I owe ken an apology.
