I am just curious to see how other teachers feel about the "Seoul-centricity" that goes on on this forum...
Is Seoul the best city in Korea?
Yes, you must include Shitaewon as Seoul...
And, why?
Don't forget, we have Home Plus and express buses everywhere...
The shit was Itaewon, referred to by it's appropriate name... Starts with SH and ends with Itaewon.... |

people who live in Seoul don't feel the need to argue that it's the best. Because they know it is. |

And people who live more interesting lives, realise that any city that is similar to another in the world is only for those who have no real desire to live. |

Is Seoul the best? I dont know about all of Seoul, there are some skanky ghettos like Shincheon, Itaewon, Hongdae. However, what I do know is that Kangnam (but specifically Daechidong) is the best in Korea. |

What? All I got from that was:
"Yeah well, I don't live in Seoul because I think I'm really deep, OK?" |

I just don't like it. Congested, way busy, generally polluted...just not my cup 'o' tea.
I'm a Chuncheon guy goin' on 9 1/2 years now....slower, cleaner, more "local" in it's feel. Heck, we didn't get a fast food place outside of Lotteria until 4 years ago.
Mountains, hiking, clean air, nice folks, ߰, , Ǿȣ, skiing, hang gliding, rafting...plus, Camp Page is moving out, returning what is arguably the best real estate in town (lakeside; about 1km in length) to the people.
Just 1 1/2 hours from Seoul. |

Some people love Seoul, some people don't.
Personally I like Seoul and it is a great place to visit but wouldn't want to live there...it would make me crazy.
I like a bit of personal space and greenery which admittadly is quite hard to find in the cities here.
But if you want to live outside Seoul you have to give a few western comforts(although in the last couple of years the other regional cities are catching up quickly) but it is a small price to pay for me.
My vote is for Changwon, i can hear you asking where but there is a lot of open parkland in this city but also plenty of semi- western facilities such as EMart, Homeplus, Outback, TGIs(June). People living here know what i'm talking about.
I like Changwon a lot but i can see why people like Seoul. |

It's about options and choices. Seoul just has more to do, buy and see than other cities.
In a more indistinct way, it's kind of nice to feel this huge, living organism humming around you every day. There's a weird kind of comfort in that. |

I was just being sarcastic. No depth to it at all. It just makes me laugh when people assume that Seoul has to be the best, when maybe they haven't lived elsewhere or when they are so into cities that they need that concrete environment to feel comfortable.
Korea is a rather small country, if you really need a city experience, it doesn't take that long to find one. Take a train or a bus, will get you somewhere very soon. [/b] |

Chuncheon is nice. I visit a couple of times a year. I also like the newer sections of Pusan. |

Perhaps you should be more specific about your desired alternative. Your contempt for other expats is muffling your message. |

Read above, I stated what I felt. Not contempt for other FT's, people are multifaceted and enjoy what they enjoy. Just amusement for funny statements that are like, "everyone who lives in Seoul, knows its the best".
I realise it was tounge in cheek, or I hope it was. But it amused me, so I just ripped off a verbal reply to that notion, understanding that people would burn over it.
But that was just my thought over the notion that comes through that everyone who doesn't live in Seoul can't understand or accept the greatness of Seoul, otherwise they would live there. Or maybe I read something into it that wasn't there. |

well it's all two sides of a coin- but when I hear people say stuff like
"...and what's more my country haven is but an hour and a half from Seoul"
I just think- well that means I'm only an hour and a half from you, but if I want to eat lasagne on a Wednesday night, I can go out and get some. |
