White wine until about 5.30 or 6 in the afternoon, especially in the summer, and then switch to red in the evening.

I usually go with white.

Never drink Korean wine. Hell, avoid all Korean alcohol when possible.

A nice Merlot or Shiraz are great. Even Cabernet trumps most whites for me, though I enjoy Chardonnay as well.

I know champagne is white, but shouldn't that have it's own option? There is no other drink really.

This is a moronic poll - red or white?... depends on the food being served.

It would be my recommendation to go with an Australian red... as they have been the best I've come accross so far in Korea. Shiraz is always pretty reliable, big fruit flavours... usually 13.5% and up is a good indication of a high brix at harvest time. If you have a Walmart down your way, or a Costco you can pick up some pretty good deals. I find that an average bottle will set you back around 10,000 to 15,000 won... after that I would not really go to far over 25,000.... just to much inconsistency down here on the ROK.

Enjoy your red... pay day is tommorow for me and I plan to get a few bottles for myself in the upcoming weeks...

Smile

Try the 5L box of Australian Hardy's Cab Sav or Chardonnay at Costco for 37k won. Not great but certainly decent for every day and good value at about 7k/L

Au contraire, another school of thinking says drink what you like.

Anybody see the 2004 movie "Sideways" with Thomas Haden Church where before his wedding, he and his a wine-loving buddy take a trip up to Napa to basically get drunk. Good viewing and quite entertaining.

Red and white are nowhere near as different as people think. As I'm sure you're all aware, red wine gets it's colour because the grape skins are not removed like they are for making white wine. The actual juice from red and white grapes is quite similar. If you did a blindfold taste test with a group of casual wine drinkers, I guarantee you half of them would not be able to tell the difference between red and white wine.

And the white for fish and red for meat rule went out in the seventies. These days it's about matching the body of the wine to the lightness/heaviness of the meal.

For a light meal like a salad or fish, I'd go with a Hardy's Shiraz. It's only 9 000 from carrefour and is an excellent value light bodied wine. For something heavier, I'd go with the 2003 Bordeaux (from carignan) for only 10 000 from the same place.

You beat me to it, mb. I saw a show called "John Cleese's Wine for the Confused."

He did a lot of experiments with wine on people. One was a blind tasting to see if people, regular wine drinkers, could tell the difference between red and white. Most people guessed wrongly.

LOL!

I don't like wine...I find it pretentious...especially when a group of ladies drink some and 'gab'... WTF?

I like getting drunk and do not have the stomach space for pints or glasses of ...whatever.

This lady likes shots.

I honestly dont understand drinking liquor for the taste (except hoegarden)..if I want something delicious I'll have a milkshake...not fermented grapes. If I ever WAS to drink wine again, I'td be in the absence of shots...and guzzled, not sipt.

Well, the white with red meat I can handle (within limits, and those limits are a Chablis left of Sauterne) but the mere thought of red with white fish makes me shudder.

Maybe, just maybe red with fish like tuna or swordfish but not Dover sole. Please. Be reasonable.
