Jeong Heon-bae, a Business Administration professor at Chung-Ang University, deplored, saying, "Many undergraduates don't know how to write even 'life,' a very easy word, or their own names in Chinese characters."

In response, universities are scrambling to come up with measures including special "tutoring" to teach below-average students.

Are universities scrambling? How much time is spent learning some subject in hagwons? How much money is spent in hagwons prior to graduating from high school? Is not private education very popular in Korea?

One of his benefits for being a full-time Korean professor is to have one or two assistants. He has an assistant do that Cyworld or MTV stuff for him.

Education Spending Jumps 33 Percent
Despite the prolonged economic downturn, Korean households increased their monthly education spending by 33.2 percent to 494,000 won ($445) on average this year from 371,000 won in 2000.

Koreans Top Spenders in Education

According to the 2004 National Accounts of OECD Countries, Korean households were quite active compared to major advanced nations in their spending on child education. Households in the United States posted 2.5 percent, followed by Japanese with 2.2 percent, Spanish with 1.7 percent, British with 1.3 percent, Germans with 0.7 percent, French with 0.6 percent and Mexicans with 0.4 percent.

Around 34 Students Leave Korea Every Day
Despite the protracted economic recession, the number of Seoul students leaving Korea to study abroad in 2004 reached an all time high. According to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education on March 29, the number of students in elementary, middle and high school who went abroad to study, including those who left for emigration or their parents' jobs from March of last year to February of this year stood at 12,317, an increase of 6.7 percent from 11,546 in 2003. In other words, an average of 34 students are leaving Korea from Seoul every day.
