Hmm, do people in Korea ever go on dates anymore? I mean waygooks, do they ask other waygooks out. I only ask b/c it seems like everyone just hooks up the first night they meet, and go from there. So, is anyone asking anyone out when they meet or just asking if they wanna go home with them? I seem to only be meeting people that assume I will have sex with them right away. Is this because that is the way things work here? Are waygook gals easier than Koreans? Or, I that should stop wearing low cut shirts and hanging out in bars? Really, what is the deal, and since I'm already complaining have the conversational skills of men really gone to hell or what? Where are the witty ones? Ok, now I'm done. Oh, one more thing, if I hear another Korean girl tell her white boyfriend, "YOU NOT ATTENTION ME!" on the subway, I'm committing honorable suicide. Now I'm really done. |

Chalk one up for dating. I know some a few good friends that think I am quaint and slightly out of touch but before I married .. There was dating.
Don't want to be making out and talking about condoms and such with a perfect stranger...and who the hell wants to wake up with a stranger...ick. Not to mention the inevitable "walk of shame". No thanks.
I guess it is okay for some but......not me. I want to know who is getting the the goodies.
Oh btw dating doesn't have to be expensive and costs should be shared.

Never was able to do the "sex on the first date" thing, even when opportunity presented itself.
I have to mentally stalk a girl for a few dates before I'm that interested. |

People who meet over the internet seem to jump to sex quicker. It's like all the internet talk has taken the place of the three date rule. Men here might be under the assumption a waegook woman hasn't had a good high hard one in a long time and she's probably in need of what you got right here baby.
Then again, I met this married Korean woman who was looking for a language partner. Pretty much every guy she met on the Korean Herald advertising "language exchange" assumed she was looking for a sex partner. |

I'm a kiwigal. In general I've found that Kiwis 'Hook up' (which could mean anything from snogging through to playing hide the hobbit). From the intial 'hook up' we repeat activities until we call eachother 'girlfriend/boyfriend,' This whole dating thing is a mystery to me. Been a few still don't get it. |

Probably the bars thing I suspect. I've yet to meet a chick I'd like to date from just walking into a bar and chatting. |

Might also be the priorities thing. Let's face it, most foreigners are here to focus on finances and when they're not, it usually involved inebriation or visiting neighboring countries. Add to the fact of the transient lifestyle that teachers have here (with exception the the long-termers, who are usuually shacked up with a Korean, by then.) and have divergent life plans with each other (after this, I'm going back to Michigan to finish my MA; I'm going to go teach in Spain for a year, etc...), the environment is not really ripe for meeting people for serious or even semi-serious dating. |

that's it. all depends on where you make your hookups and how drunk the two of you are. |

"Is it a date?" is like Schrodinger's cat. You don't know until after the fact. Is it a date or is it two friends of the opposite sex going out as friends?
If you think it's a date and she thinks you're friends, it's no date. If you think it's friends and she thinks it's a date, it's no date.
You both have to think "this is a date". In other words, you both have to think "my end goal with this person is nudity and lil of the old yi ha ride 'em skipper! Possibily within the context of a relationship."
So both have to view going out (ie the date) as a building process by which each person wants to set down emotional tendrils, grow the relationship, and eventually get it on. |

Yeah, that sums up the 'dating scene'.
Korea is definetely a 'drinking culture'.. and whenever I meet someone I usually go for galbi and drinking on another night (but usually with a Korean woman).
I have never went out with a foreign woman in Korea.. not because I'm not interested.. but I just don't know know any.. and am not in the same place they go. I usually only see the western girls hanging around the GI bars like Geckos before curfew. Where else do they go? |

So are you saying that, in your experience, the dating scene in Korea is basically meeting once and then setting up a time to meet later on and the meeting alone for dinner and drinks and then getting busy that night?
I seem to have some difficulty meeting Korean women who are really into the idea of going out alone and getting drunk with a foreign guy they barely know on the first date without a at least a chaprone or close friend around. |
Well, I don't know about 'getting busy that night'. But I lean towards the 'meal and drinks' for dating as opposed to watching a movie.
Regarding chaperones.. I've never had a girl bring a chaperone.. but I think things are a lot different here in Seoul.
Regarding 'hooking up the first night' and going from there.. which is sumundur's original statement.. I notice thats more common with foreigners.. usually with a Korean if you hook up the first night.. thats pretty much the last night too.
