I'm bored and thinking about building a server. 1 GHz Via C3 processors are listed for 44,000 at http://www.danawa.co.kr
They can be cooled with a fan-less heatsink but I'm worried that it will be hard to find a socket 370 mobo in gaming crazy Korea. Sub 2 GHz P4s are going for about 80,000-100,000 and would probably be easier to find. I've got RAM, HDDs and other assorted parts sitting around. I'm thinking the crucial things are going to be finding a quiet case and PSU. How do you know if a case is going to be quiet when you're looking at it on the shelf? Has anyone tried to build something like this in Korea? |

I gave it some thought, but learned that VIA has better stuff available on their website. But not necessarily cheap.
I thought of building a quiet computer for downloading stuff online, or acting as a server -- with low power consumption. |

You can pick up absolutely silent power-supplies and CPU fans, but will cost you 50,000 each instead of the usual fairly cheap stuff. Case fans can be bought that are silent too.
A catch is that some cheap stuff that offers reduced noise is marketed as silent. Check before buying as the cooling stores generally will set up anything to let you have a listen.
But once you have quiet setup, you'll have to pay attention to the hard drives. Seagates and Samsungs are generally the quietest on the market today, while Western Digitals are very noticable.
Or for about 200,000 or so, you can pick up a sealed case complete with water cooling and passive cooling options for a total zero-noise solution. The case only holds four drives though, so that may not be an option if you wish to expand your server over time and wish to have all the drives fit inside. |

Also bear in mind that very often, silent=stock speeds. If you like to push your hardware (says my 2.8 P4 @ 3.6), then the silent road isn't a realistic one.
Water cooling is usually the exception, but these days, even water coolers have gome so "user-friendly" (which often means lowered performance) and mainstream, they often don't work any better than a good HS/fan combo.
Ehh....what do I know? I like the sound of my home apache...it just makes me turn up the speakers more.
I do have a passive cooler on my graphics card (the Zalman monster), but without a fan, it doesn't do what I need, so it's had a mini-blaster hooked to it's belly. |

Here's where I get into trouble. If I'm going to spend 150,000 on fans, I might as well get the 200,000 sealed water-cooled case. And if I'm going to drop that much on a case, I might as well spend 100,000 more and get a AMD 64. Then I might as well go PCIe and get a 500,000 graphics card. The thing is, I never played Doom 1 or 2 so I doubt I'm going to get into Doom 3. If I did, I would just play it on my xbox (sorry Demophobe, I know that hurts ). Just for the sake of argument, do you have a link (Korean) to any quiet cases, Gord? Daegu has a street of computer stores (behind migliore) and most of them have fans but I've never seen a shop that specializes in cooling here. I like Samsung Spinpoint hard drives. |

know what ya mean...........
if budget is a constraint, then consider mounting h/d using rubber washers. use heavy felt on the inside of the case where possible and where it does not block air flow.
If fan noise is a problem and cooling is not, run the fans at a lower voltage - you can buy a 12DC controller, or just put diodes in series (in4001) until the noise drops. |

Nice call on Zalman. Today I installed the CNPS7700-Cu for my AMD 64 +3200 and a ZM-NB47J passive heatsink in place of the loud chipset fan on the Asus A8NE. The chipset and CPU are significantly cooler and my box is now quieter than my router. Now how do I make my DVD R/RW silent? |

Via sucks dealt with a lot of their systems.. I would just go pick up a Asus socket adapter for Pentium M and and socket 478 mobo and you got your silent system. |
