Woori Bank Issues Credit Card for Robert Kim
A local bank has issued a credit card for a Korean-American civilian computer expert who served seven-year prison term for passing classified documents of the U.S. Navy to his native country South Korea.
Robert C. Kim had worked for U.S. Naval intelligence before he was arrested on Sept. 24, 1996 on the spy charges. The 65-year-old man has declared bankruptcy due to financial difficulties as a result of lawsuits over the charges in 1997.
As Kim has neither regular income nor a resident registration number similar to social security number in the U.S. here, he is not allowed to be a credit card holder in this country. However, Woori Bank has decided to issue a card for Kim at the request of his supporters' association. The credit limit of the card is relatively low and his supporters guaranteed his credit, the bank said.
