Hey guys,
my director told me today that Busan immigration will be keeping my passport for two weeks untill they issue me with my ARC card, is this comman practise.
What do they do with it, and why couldn't they just copy the info page and go from there. |

Its how its done. Why are you worried about it? Immi always returns your passport. |

I guess you are technically vulnerable without it. But I doubt you will have to use it during the week or two that Immi has it. And anyay, if you are in a bind you can alays get it back from the early I suppose. |

Keep the piece of paper you get back when you send of for your alien card. that's your 'ID' until both are returned to you in two weeks.
I know a few directros like to 'hang on' to passports as insurance against runners. This is totally illegal and if you have any problems with your directior not giving you your passport back then get on the blower with your embassy as passport theft is something that they take very seriously. |

Good point. NEVER EVER let your boss near your passport. That means YOU, not your boss, take the receipt and YOU, not your boss, pick up your passport and ARC. Same with your other documents. Always hold on to all your documents. |

Sometimes that's easier said than done. A lot of hogwons won't give time off for teachers to do this sort of stuff and not all imigration offices are open on a saturday. Of course you have to be present for your alien card as most places require finger prints for your intial application.
But I had an experience where incheon immigration released my passport and ARC card to my boss without my knowledge nor consent. It took a rather blantent I'm going to call the embassy if you don't release my passport for it to be returned. So sometimes it's out of a teachers hands where their documents.go. |

I disagree. It's as easy to say as it is to do. Or, its as easy to do as it is to say. You simply make it clear to everyone involved that you and ONLY you get to ever hold on to your things. Make it clear at Immigration that you will not allow your documents to be released to anyone other than you or anyone who has your receipt. If that happens ou make it clear that you will be contacting your embassy and complaining about the immigration officer who released your things without permission from you. You cannot be a victim unlss you allow yourself to be victimized.
You understand this. You did something about it by standing up for yourself. And you got your stuff back. |

Yeah - and you can always tell bpsses (and Immigration) the truth - the passport actually remains the property of your respective Government...well...that's stated in mine very clearly anyway... |

I trust my current employer enough to let them do my documents. They always return everything to me immediately.
This, however, was a trust that was earned -- never given first. |

Its ok to let them have your docs. But its also ok to threaten them with the police and embassy if you don't have them back in reasonable time.
Don't worry, they're not going to take it personally. They know the score. |

I dont think i will have a problem with my employer, he has never asked for it before, he understands that its an important document.
I was just a bit shocked that they kept it that long, as i said earlier in China they released it the next day. |

O.K.
This is what you do ...
Before you come (and bring copies)
Photocopy or scan you passport's information page.
Photocopy or scan you passport page where you have your E-2 stamp
(before entry)
ASAP
Photocopy or scan you passport page where you have your E-2 Stamp
(after entry)
Keep (don't lose) your receipt from immigration.
Don't give your passport to your boss, go to immigration yourself, and you keep the receipt.
Immigration does hold your passport for two weeks and will give it back to you, or, maybe, the reciept holder.
If you do not recieve your passport back: ASAP ... GOTO your Embassy NOW ... Don't go to work, don't listen to B.S. and take your photcopies with you and report your passport stolen.
Also, photcopy or scan your residence card.

Yeah, I was totally freaked when I heard that immigration was going to keep my passport for 10 days. Like I'm gonna trust those guys with my passport. But it all turned out okay. |
