| I see a Union is going to be launched --- the Pusan Conference will be the beginning of it for Foreign Teachers --- seems efl-law group were approached by a group who asked that the KFTU form an umbrella union for foreigners and have agreed --- obviously more will come out in May -- but it can only be a good thing with the new rules coming in -- it will be impossible to get a job in Korea with these new rules - qualifications and language test -- and hogwans will be prevented from hiring foreigners unless the foreigner satisfies the standard -- |

| Labor unions don't work well in industries with high turnover and small numbers of workers in each workplace. Its too hard to form a union when you get the kind of insane turnover that you get in most hagwons and it'd be a bit silly to try to collectively bargain if there's only a foreign worker or two (as there are in many many hagwons). |
Regarding your first point, it's a circular argument. Generally, there's low turnover in unionized settings because unionization, again generally, leads to better pay, benefits, and working conditions. To take one example, the turnover at auto plants in Detroit during the 30s was about what you see at hagwons.
As to your second point, it would probably be easier to organize larger hagwon chains than the mom and pop schools. But I think we'll see consolidation in hagwon industry over the next ten years, anyway. |

This is not surprising. The chaos of the hagwon schools probably offends Koreans at some level. The natural response is to impose standards and organize. We'll know that the KFTU is being effective when the hagwon owners counter with an effective trade association. |

They have hagwon owners associations already.
Don't know how effective it is though... |

Something skunky about "In the know."
His last foray onto this forum was about unspecific dire changes coming down on teachers this june. Called on repeatedly to show any evidence, he never responded. His posting record is sketchy & he seems tied in with disruptive political nitpicking.
Now we're to take his word again ("In the know" -- very clever) & fear for our very livelihood. His premise is farfetched & unsubstantiated. Delusional oddball, my guess. |
