Any of you guys know anyone who went to Korea to teach after JET being their first teaching job and how they found it? |
That would be me!!
Yay me!!
Hogwons after JET will be a bit of a change, I certainly missed my JET days in the beginning and the thought of teaching 6 hours a day just blew my mind and I needed to sit down.
Got used to it though and I certainly never hated my first job.
It did make me realize how lucky I was on JET, ((What a crappy rule they had back then... 3 years and then goodbye ))
On the plus side, my first year in Korea was the first time I had a fulltime job that started in the afternoon....nothing beats getting up anytime you want.
I;d say go for it, if you liked the teaching travelling life, you should be happy here. Korea isn't as diverse as Japan....but I guess not many people go from Okinawa to Hokkaido
Sushi sux....but I miss okonomiyaki!... oh those dancin fish, never failed to amaze me |

I for one think that 1-9 is a bit long. How much of that time is "in class." |
I'd be teaching a class of kindergarten as soon as I come in and then I've got a break until 3pm, when it seems I pretty much work straight through.
Pretty unusual the break being so early after the start of my shift in my opinion. I'm guessing maybe thats when the kindie students disappear and the elementary/middle schoolers come in? I'm guessing of course. |

I wasn't on the JET program, but I did live and work in Japan for a number of years before coming to Korea, via a few other countries along the way. I had some pretty cushy jobs in Japan, including one where I taught eight hours a week and got full salary. In addition, since I was teaching "Business English" at a few companies, I was often wined and dined by my students. It was quite the life.
Fast forward to a few years later, when I found myself in Korea. To be honest, I hated it. Absolutely hated it. I kept comparing it shiny clean Japan and my life of relative idleness over there.
Fast forwrd a few more years later and I am back in Korea, via a few more countries, the last one being where I was worked like a slave and received insulting wages. I put up with it because it was in a country where I had wanted to live. Coming from that however, I found Korea to be a more more agreeable place and much more to my liking.
Point being, it depends on where you're coming from, what your experience has been and what your expectations are. It's no Japan, for sure, but all-in-all, it's not a bad place at all. Just don't be comparing it with JET...whole different kettle of fish. |

1-9 is a bit long.. 8 hours everyday. i guess you'd have A LOT of breaks in there I hope.
The good thing is that most of Seoul is open 24 hours.. (except for the subway).. so you could technically still explore regardless of your hours.
Either do your exploring of the nightlife or night markets after work.. or get up when the sun rises and go do things. |

I just saw one job on Dave's job ads a few days ago, but I think it may have been a Kid's Club and then I read another thread with someone saying bad things about Kid's Club or maybe even that school. Anyway you might want to check it out but don't blame me if it's a bad job!

If you're going to compare everything in Korea to JET, you are setting yourself up for a world of endless disappointments, my friend.

I have class from 4-9 or 4-10. I'm usually at school 2-10.
I like it. Most days I go to the gym and work out, then hit the mogyoktang (hottub/sauna/plunge pool/showers) for an hour. Once a week I do language exchange with a K-teacher.
As long as I have appointments to keep with a workout buddy, language exchange partner or something, that keeps me from falling into the staying up watching TV / sleeping in trap.
When I'm soaking in the hottub or munching a donut and learing Korean at 1:00 in the afternoon I feel like I'm living the life of the idle rich.
The only thing I wish I could change would be to get off at 8 or 9 instead of 10 on Fridays. By the time I get downtown to meet my friends a lot of the fun has already been had. |
