I'm a woman with some tattoos. I have been thinking of checking out the sauna in my apartment building. Has anyone else who has tattoos experienced anything bad in the sauna? Or will I just get stared at a lot?

Also, do I need to bring my own towel, or do I get one in there?

I really would like to try it out, because showering in my little bathroom is not the most relaxing thing in the world. Smile Thanks in advance!

My friend and I go to the sauna and she has tattoos. Mostly people leave her alone. Occasionally she's had the odd stare but mostly people are too busy scrubbing themsevles.

Don't need towels but do need beauty products and to shower first before getting in the tubs to soak

As with gyms, there are a few saunas that won't accept people with tattoos. (or any foreigners for that matter).

Luckily, they are very few in number.

No, no Japanese. Smile

I have a red and black yin-yang symbol with a Pisces symbol underneath, that sort of looks like a Chinese character. And I have a Chinese dragon, and a Haida Indian hawk, and some Elven script.

I also have a nipple and a navel piercing. I hope the ajummas won't be too alarmed by this strange Caucasian person!

Maybe I'll take the plunge (so to speak) this weekend.

Bring a towel and your shampoo, soap, etc. Unless you are going to a high priced Jjimjilbang which will supply most of that as part of your fee.

In my old every Saturday sauna the ladies a few times offered to scrub my back (common in Korea and they had seen me and knew I spoke Korean) and I do believe they especially tried to see if the tattoo would come off... it seemed a bit concentrated there, but I got a clean back out of the bargain, and the tattoo is right between my shoulder blades where it's hardest for me to scrub myself!

I actually have a full leg sleeve Japanese tattoo. Embarassed No Kanji though, but Japanese artwork. At the gym I wear shorts and use the shower and no one has given me any grief. No stares even.

And I don't even live in cosmopolitan Seoul!

Don't mess with me, Derrek. You might end up at the bottom of Han river. Wink

Actually a few of the Korean musclemen always say hello to me and sometimes give me weightlifting tips. Maybe they're trying to prove how tough they are by talking to a gangster.

The majority of Korean mafia have tattoos, some seamen. Women here adore their skin, so it'd probably be seen as just an anomaly, nothing more.

I'm going to buy a new jean jacket (I hope) and brave a sauna, and go drinking with some other expats. What are YOU doing? Smile
