A lot of the movies here aren't any better than the poorer ones in America in my own opinion. I've seen a number of Korean movies that aren't very good, that seem to have no plot, or a plot that is so ridiculous that it just makes the movie itself hard to watch. IMO these are mostly the romantic comedies. They just don't seem to know what they want to be most of the time, drama or comedy, or something in the middle, and they usually go on too long. |
I agree. A lot of the Korean so-called romantic comedies have more corn than Iowa. For instance, that movie calle Windstruck was just garbage. Yes there were a few good ones, a couple at the most imho, but the rest were just copycats with no originality.
Like in any other country Korea has a few good movies and a lot of bad ones out there.

I've seen a couple decent Korean movies but on the whole I've found them sub-par...immature as one poster said.
I've come to realize that there is absolutely no distinction between a comedy and romantic comedy. In fact pretty much any Korean movie that isn't a drama or horror will be a full blown vagina movie.
Half way through these flicks there is always the inevitable cry baby fest with the main character sobbing and weeping like a little biatch because of lost love/death of a loved one/family problems/girlfriend had an abortion, etc. etc.
I'd love to see ONE korean comedy that doesn't turn in to some bleeding ass, sitting down to pee, tampon commercial.

That is my favourite too. One of the few times I've seen dark humour used in korean media. I hate slapstick comedy, but many koreans seem to love it |

I love the scene where he goes to the TKD gym and asks the guy wearing the head brace how to defend himself. The guy keeps suggesting he should kick his boss. |

nothing wrong with pop music.
i like korean music, movies and dramas. some are better than others.
same in the states. i can listen to the macarena today and not think "omg no" because i didn't listen to it on repeat when it came out, and i also didn't listen to it on the radio.

| It's a given that K-pop music is vacuous and moronic. I keep hearing good things about K-movies. Well, when are the producers going to make them more accessible to non-Korean speakers? How about issuing these things with subtitles at first release? If the so-called 'Korean Wave' is to be believed, then it has to generate more buzz than in, say, Cambodia, or it runs the risk of becoming another flavor-of-the-season. Australian movies were famous once, for a while. |

Um, how many films back in your country had Korean subtitles for the few Koreans that lived there? It's a simple cost-benefit analysis, and there's no way that getting subtitled prints into Korean theatres is going to entice a sufficient number of English speakers in to make it worthwhile.
Besides, http://www.seoulselection.com/screening.html has the occasional subtitled print AND 95% of all Korean DVDs have English subtitles.
I don't know what the problem is. |

I've heard people complain about the lack of subtitled Korean movies, as if English speakers are some movie going force in Korea to be reckoned with at the box office. We ain't. Few Korean movies make a profit and no one wants to piss off the bread and butter Korean consumer. The fact is Koreans find the English subtitles bothersome. That makes them no different from North American viewers. The reason subtitled films aren't popular at the North American box office is people don't like subtitles either, save for the art crowd. One should be thankful that Korea tries to run some subtitled first run movies like Silmido and Taeguke. |

Well, you might have been on to something if most Korean movies weren't just plain bad.
Of course, there is some good Korean music, but don't expect to hear it on the radio. If you teach at a university, get acquainted with the students in the rock music clubs if you're into that kind of music. I'm sure they can point you in the right direction. |
