I have one afterschool class of 3-4 graders and one of 5-6 graders. I teach them phonics and a storybook. |

I'll be on an afterschool program (1-5) in Ansan and the principal wants me to make classes "fun." What exactly do Korean elementary students (and their parents) consider fun? Let me know, what IS a fun lesson?
On a related topic, I'm meeting the parents on Saturday. Any advice besides what my ex-GF once said? ("Look good, smell good and save me a dance.") Or does that cover the basics? |

I made "fun" from
tup pok i - fat noodles in catsup
give the little ones rides
play the bad teeth game - the game questions you make up but the scoring is the kicker - make 2 big heads with great big toothy smiles - when one side, boys or girls gets ques right, you black out a tooth on the other side |

Jack's right; don't believe everything you hear. There's some exaggeration out there so take some of it with a large grain of salt.
Incidentally, I'm with GEPIK and while I won't deny that it has its glitches, in the main, I've been quite happy with them and I think most GEPIKers feel the same way, at least the ones I've spoken with. The people who seem to complain most about it are people who aren't working for GEPIK. People who are working in public schools outside GEPIK or EPIK. People who are still getting the longer vacations. From what I'm hearing, that is going to be phased out eventually and the dweeb and others are going to end up with the same two week vacations as the rest of us mere mortals. Enjoy it while it lasts, DW, and keep that gloating coming. It's endlessly entertaining. |

Well, perhaps it will get phased out but not until I enjoy my 3.5 weeks of travelling this summer. |

Do you think there might be some connection between so many people accepting two week vacations, and the goverment trying to take away the longer vacations promised to the rest of us? |

On a recent poll on the website for GEPIK teachers a whopping 66% said they would not renew their contracts.
Many citing lack of decent vacation time and sitting around the school when you have no classes.
One teacher I know in GEPIK teaches Mon- Thurs. No classes on Friday but they still expect her to sit around the school all day.
Remember with Koreans its quantity not quality! |

Teaching literature to middle schoolers ain't going to happen. It was cute of you to think so but the reality is that you are going to be seeing 20+ classes once a week. There are 40 kids per class and you'll be dealing with kids with an intermediate grasp of english that could handle some basic childrens' literature. Unfouratnly they will be sitting next to kids who don't know their ABCs and you will be expected to teach them all.
As for the GEPIK/EPIK thing. There are people in EPIK that complain and EFL-Law lists them as employers to avoid., Of course that's not to say all EPIKs are having a hard time of it, but it seems that it basically comes down to which area you end up in. Also don't EPIKs have to move to a different school every year or so? Seems kind of stupid to move if you are already settled in a position and know the kids.
As for GEPIK, none of the people in the middle school nor the adjoining city are part of the GEPIK programme. We are all happy in our positions. As far as I can see a lot of schools here see GEPIK money as blood money, sure it's good to start with but the problems it causes down the track don't make it worth it.
It also stops schools forming good relationships with their teachers. I teach a little more than the average GEPIK teacher but I get more vacation time. I know which I would prefer. Working slightly more classes when I've pretty much got to be at school anyway so that I can enjoy my vacation time. I can also go home early when I finish up my shorterned camps and my school always lets me go off early during school time so long as I let them know what I'm up to. |

As far as GEPIK in my burg they are avoiding it like the plague at least in the middle school where I am teaching.
The money up front is nice but it is very difficult as clg mentioned to build a relationship with the teachers.
I teach 27 classes. I also teach on Saturday and teach a C.A. class. I also teach an after school class twice a week. (paid extra) My school would lose big time if they went GEPIK.
I teach very very abbreviated camps. I get at least 2 or 3 weeks in the summer and anywhere from 3 to 5 in the winter.
I leave early twice a week to study korean in Seoul. I also can pretty much leave when my classes are over. When I am between afterschool classes I can leave about 3:30.
The school knows they don't always have to give me a raise if they just give me some breathing room.
This year they gave me my own english room. Yeah I teach alot during the year but the vacations and relative autonomy is worth it.
I don't think my school wants anything to do with GEPIK. Right now they are mostly targeting the Elementary schools. Hope it stays that way.

I know of several hogkwans that paid on time, treated their techers excellent, worked 25 hours- and still many teachers did not renew. Why?
Culture shock
Lonelyness
They don't like Korean food
They don't like Korea
They missed home
They want a job in their field of uni discipline
Plus one hundred other reasons
Remember, many posters like me are lifers, but some actually do want to come for just one year and they give reasons for why they don't return...bogus reasons. I'm not knocking them, but they just want to make the money and go. Some have no experience teaching shy Korean students and are very naive when they applied and got the job. They probably thought it would be like teaching back home. |

many of the people in GEPIK are repeat offenders. 2nd or 3rd year.
GEPIK is now offering less money and less vacation time to re-sign our contracts. Its almost like they are trying to fail! |
