You don't have to have a degree in math, but you do have to have a teaching degree........... at least in Canada.
Sure lots of teachers teach outside their areas of specialization, it's part of being a good teacher to be able to adapt.
Speaking of "who judges who is qualified to teach in a hagwan"..........
I'm leaving as of today, gave my notice at the beginning of this month. My boss is looking for a new teacher. This morning I heard that he turned one guy down because he wasn't "qualified". I never met the guy, so I can't comment on what his real qualifications were, but it just goes to show that hagwan directors are a bit more picky these days as to whom they will hire.
At the same time, the latest Korean teacher he hired is still a university student and this is her first teaching job.
I guess the main "qualification" he is looking for is someone who will put up with things like not getting paid and not complain. |

I'd totally agree that paper qualifications mean nothing with regards to how well someone can teach in a hagwon. The problem isn't really underqualified teachers its poor QUALITY teachers doing shitty jobs.
There needs to be some way for a hagwon owner to differentiate between a shitty teacher and a decent one and one way of doing this is through paper qualifications. Its not really ideal though.
Part of the problem now is that hagwon owners can't tell th difference between someone who wants to teach professionally and someone who wants to make some soju-money for 3 months then do a runner.
Therefore owners HAVE to assume that everyone they see is going to be bad. The result of which is that they pay crappy wages, don't treat teachers with respect, etc etc |
