The driving is really a question of perspective and where you are from. It is also a question of how long cars have been available on a mass quantity scale. This is where the comparison falls appart in my opinion. Cars are relatively recent here, hence the driving culture is young. They do drive on the edge but whats more excusable (another bad comparison but why not... ) ? On the edge Korean drivers in a country still young to car culture or bad drivers in North American cities in a place with a much older car culture? |
And here's my excuse for playing hangman in class: I had been in Korea for less than a year, so my teaching skills were less developed than yours.
Pretty good excuse, no? |

Korea does kimchi and other Korean food well.
They don't do good beer/alcohol. |

One thing that Koreans do way better than most places I've been is "customer service", that is........unless you're a wayguk-in.
I mean really, in most restaurants, clubs or stores or banks the
customer is King.
I've never seen this level of customer service in Canada, much less the US, but perhaps I haven't looked in the right places.
The problem for most of us is that hagwan directors seem to think that we should treat students like "customers at a restaurant" and we should be the waiters. |

You don't get good serviice?
I find it's almost too good sometimes, I don't need someone running around after me in a clothing store, although I do appreciate someone chasing me down the street because I left my newspaper on the table in a restuarant. |

Usually I do get good service. Far better than I would receive back home.
But not always. It's usually other customers who rub me the wrong way though. |

Westerners are much better at interacting with foreigners, especially those with limited command of the local language. I find that often Koreans are too nervous to say much to me, or they start jabbering away, and if I don't understand they start over--LOUDER AND FASTER. The idea of saying something slower and using simple words tends not to occur to them.
Our television is much better as well. The cool factor of English isn't the only reason Korean TV has so many western programs and movies.
Suprisingly to me, we do vegetarianism way better. At home I could have soymilk, soy ice cream, pretty much any fake meat you can think of, veggie microwave meals, and go out to veggie-only restaurants.
What they do far, far better: paying your bills. Just take it down to the bank, get in line, and you're done. No mailing a check and hoping it doesn't get lost, etc.
Ice cream. Koreans are far more creative about it. Just go dig through the bin at your local FamilyMart.
And Korean rest stops must be the best in the world. Good food, stocked convenience stores, unbelievably clean and attractive bathrooms. I was in one today where the bathroom walls were decorated with bamboo and the center was taken up by a well-kept up garden. |

Ok. I feel great today.
So here's some lip service for all our foreign friends in Dave's
What Koreans do better:
NONE.
What Koreans do worse:
EVERYTHING.
Have a nice weekend. |
