Here's the place for Pepper Spray, and I saw it still was for sale there as of last Friday:

The 7-11 store just across from the Goldfish Bar in Itaewon (and across from the Manhattan restaurant, which is under reconstruction, or something).

It's on the wall behind the check-out person.

you can also get all kinds of brass knucks in Songtan from the street vendor dudes...and switchblades...and butterfly knives...not that I would ever suggest buying or using them.

Hmm...I'm sure the weapons are all very fun (though I wouldn't recommend them either) but the idea of pepper spray is to cause temporary, reversible damage, right? Just give a thought to what kind of you might be in after using any of these things.

Peace out,

I am sorry to hear that your friend had a bad experience. After I read your post I conducted some world class research on your behalf. You may find this website useful when looking for some top notch pepper spray:

You introduce the AK-47 line and you expect people to treat this seriously? And when someone responds in kind, not being able to read your tone, you immediate take a dump down his mouth. And we're supposed to read this and go "yeah let's help the OP and feel sympathy for him and his friend."

Maybe you haven't been following the thread about the two Canadian guys who were jumped but were able to defend themselves and they were the ones who ended up in jail. It would seem in Korea in any fight, the one with the lesser injuries is determined to be the cause.

Acquiring some kind of weapon and using it in self defense would only result in a nice stint in a Korean jail.

Hey, just a thought, but Korea is mighty fucking windy. In a wind, Pepper spray can become useless or harmful to the user. Further, if your against a brave and/or fighting type of person they may take the spray (or knife, or AK) from your hands and go to town on ya with them. SO what to do?
My suggestion is two fold 1) sign up for a self-defense class, not Tae Kwon do or Kumdo which are flashy but kinda pointless in a fight (at first- chill high rankers), and go with thai boxing or Jiu jitsu witch will teach you enough to run away. Secondly, until you get those skills built up, order a sonic self defense canister online. They are a device kinda similar to an aimable ultra high powerer air horn. Easy, non-lethal and effective. Just remember, once you incapacitate the perp- RUN. Do NOT stay and whup on them to get back at them- that is illegal in the US, Canada (probably), and Korea (if you're a waygooken then certainly).

-the ak47 crack was me being extremely angry and resorting to exaggeration to illustrate how much my friend's attack has shocked me.

"yeah let's help the OP and feel sympathy for him and his friend."

-my friend was an innocent victim of a random attack that could have ended way worse than it did. if you are having trouble feeling sympathy just because i took a particulary militant tone about this situation... you have problems.

-as far as i can tell, obtaining something for self defence is her only option, and if her options were rape or jail, she'd choose jail. any interactions she's had with the police ended up with her being patronized and cussed out for being a 'stupid kyopo woman'. so i do thank you for the concern but i think we'll approach this situation RAMBO style from now on, just to be safe.

i'm sorry to hear about your friend.

isn't this a forum for english teachers? how come so many posters here don't understand the simple literary device of hyperbole? obviously uberscheisse is upset and not going to use an AK 47 on someone.

To the OP, have you followed up on Derrek's lead on the pepper gas gun? (BTW, it amazes me that these things are sold at 7-11s. I thought I recall them being banned years ago, but now you can buy them at convenience stores?! Confused and Shocked )

Uber... Sean... You say this was a random attack, so I'll assume the attacker and your friend didn't know each other. Without going into more detail than you or she would prefer, could you tell me a little more of the nature of the attack. Does she live or work in a seedy/dangerous area, or ... i dunno ... was she walking home alone late at night, dark alleys, etc.? Specifically, would you say that her biggest fear now that this same attacker knows where she lives/works and will come after her again? Or does she (understandably, perhaps) now simply fear any male stranger, whatever the location or circumstances?

Why am I asking? Well, mainly because the relative absence of random violence is one of Korean society's saving graces, and incidents which suggest this may be changing are, I think, worth everyone's concern.

I've had girlfriends, as well as girl_friends, who've been attacked or nearly attacked by taxi drivers, landlords, employers, strangers at nightclubs, strangers in alleys, etc., and there's not a single incident that didn't set my blood boiling. If I posted here hoping to get some advice & help right after one of those incidents, I'm sure I'd be at least as overwrought as Uberscheisse may have felt. People might want to cut him a bit of slack right now. He's a decent sort from what I can tell, and this isn't the time to score points off him in a debate.
