I came because I had an unsastifying job at the time and needed a little adventure. I saw an add in the newspaper and figured it couldn't be any worse than what I was doing at the time. And it wasn't. It wasn't much better...However, I did really enjoy the nightlife when I first got over there. The girls looked pretty hot, too.

University convocation was approaching, and I had no plans for the future. Roommates were going off to law school, pharmacy, and masters programs, and I had no plans! Heard from a friend about the ESL industry in Japan. Was told about Dave's site. Read about Korea. Didn't know much (ok, anything) about Korea, thought it would be cool. Was supposed to be here in June, made it by September, 2001.

To avoid getting married, having kids, and pay off my mountain of debt I emailed one of my buddies brothers who was already here.. and now I'm here.

It's a funny wee world.

Initially, being spiteful towards an ex-wife who married for the sole purpose of becoming Canadian.

Secondly, my ex-wife hates Korea and everything Korean.

Finally, having been here for a while, I fell in love with the place (although the stares always bother the crap out of me).

wanted to go overseas and work after university. Came across a NOVA ad on some job website (hotjobs I think). Got offered a job by nova, found out how bad they are on the internet (including this website) and came across Korea. Seemed like a better place to make money than Japan, so came here. Needed to pay off a few grand in debt so money was definitly a motivating factor. Came back for a 2nd year because of my g/friend. outta here in october or november though.

Hated my job, and just had to quit. I also wanted to travel and I knew that getting a job teaching English was a possibility. Researched on the internet, did a TESL course, and about six months later I was here. I thought I'd probably go back after the first year, now I'm not sure when/if I'll ever go back...

Wanted to travel, learn a new language, see a new culture. It proved to be a little difficult to find a job in Japan, but finding a job in Korea is like throwing yourself at the ground and missing -- so here I am.

i met this girl at uni. she went back to her country. then i watched good will hunting and saw this scene:

Will
So, when did you know, like, that she was the one for you?

Sean
October 21st, 1975.

Will
Jesus Christ. You know the f__kin' date?

Sean
Oh yeah. Cus' it was game six of the World Series. Biggest game in Red Sox history.

Will
Yeah, sure.

Sean
My friends and I had, you know, slept out on the sidewalk all night to get tickets.

Will
You got tickets?

Sean
Yep. Day of the game. I was sittin' in a bar, waitin' for the game to start, and in walks this girl. Oh it was an amazing game, though. You know, bottom of the 8th Carbo ties it up at a 6-6. It went to 12. Bottom of the 12th, in stepped Carlton Fisk. Old Pudge. Steps up to the plate, you know, and he's got that weird stance.

Will
Yeah, yeah.

Sean
And BAM! He clocks it. High fly ball down the left field line! Thirty-five thousand people, on their feet, yellin' at the ball, but that's not because of Fisk. He's wavin' at the ball like a madman.

Will
Yeah, I've seen...

Sean
He's going, "Get over! Get over! Get OVER!" And then it HITS the foul pole. OH, he goes apesh_t, and 35,000 fans, you know, they charge the field, you know?

Will
Yeah, and he's f__in' bowlin' police out of the way!

Sean
Goin' "God! Get out of the way! Get 'em away!" Banging people..

Will
I can't fu__in' believe you had tickets to that fuckin' game!

Sean
Yeah!

Will
Did you rush the field?

Sean
No..I didn't rush the f___in' field, I wasn't there.

Will
What?

Sean
No..I was in a bar havin' a drink with my future wife.

Will
You missed Pudge Fisk's homerun?

Sean
Oh yeah.

Will
To have a f__kin' drink with some lady you never met?

Sean
Yeah, but you shoulda' seen her. She was a stunner.

Will
I don't care if f__in'--

Sean
Oh no, no, she lit up the room.

Will
I don't care if Helen of Troy walks in the room, that's game six!

Sean
Oh, Helen of Troy..

Will
Oh my God, and who are these f___in' friends of yours they let you get away with that?

Sean
Oh...They had to.

Will
What'd you say to them!?

Sean
I just slid my ticket across the table and I said, "Sorry guys, I gotta' see about a girl."

Will
I gotta' go see about a girl?

Sean
Yeah.

Will
That's what you said? And they let you get away with that?

Sean
Oh yeah. They saw in my eyes that I meant it.

Will
You're kiddin' me.

Sean
No, I'm not kiddin' you, Will. That's why I'm not talkin' right now about some girl I saw at a bar twenty years ago and how I always regretted not going over and talking to her. I don't regret the 18 years I was married to Nancy. I don't regret the six years I had to give up counseling when she got sick. And I don't regret the last years when she got really sick. And I sure as hell don't regret missin' the damn game. That's regret.

Will
Wow... Woulda' been nice to catch that game, though.

Sean
I didn't know Pudge was gunna hit a homer.

At first it was to get away from the third world nation of Nova Scotia. Then it was because the start up costs for Japan were too much for someone from a third world nation. Then it was for a girl.

Now I do it because I hate all of you white people. Wink

I was short of work due to my reliance on public transit which had gone on strike so I spent a lot of time at a coffee shop.

I met a korean man there one day and then a few more times in the next week.

he told me his job was to find people to go to Korea to teach english.

he asked me if I would like to and I thought he was joking so said "sure!"

three days later he gave me a round trip ticket and told me I was scheduled to start in three days Shocked

I quickly sold and stored my stuff and packed and here I am!

Denz - that has to be one of the nicest things I have ever read on this board. That was totally beautiful.

As to how I got here? I'd always thought about it, and had just come back home after being on holiday in the South Island with a friend. She had flown off to Perth, most of my friends back home were working, and I was just an unemployed bum, coupled with the fact that me and my mother only get on well when there is some distance - too much alike, I wanted to just get away. and i did. Also by working 1 year over here, I will have enough money to pay off my debts, a huge student loan instalment, and still be able to get to England. Which would take a few years working in NZ. so hey, one years sacrifice aint much, when you consider how much fun i am going to have in the uk when it is all over. Cool

I'll just repeat what others have said with a twist: it was about a girl. who went back to Canada. I stayed and met another girl. Now I'm married with a month old daughter.

Life sure is strange at times.
