I was reading in the local papers about an incident where the chairman of Samsung, while on his way to get an honorary Doctorate, was met with protestors and jostled about at Korea University:

What caught my eye in the article was this statement:
Quote: |
"Although this was an unexpected event, we, as educators, feel responsible for the violence and display of undemocratic behavior." |
So, then I read an editorial in the same paper:
http://joongangdaily.joins.com/200505/03/200505032211501339900090109011.html
I read in the editorial the following:
Quote: |
Students can oppose administrative actions by the school, but the methods by which these are expressed should be based on intelligent protest. There are many ways to express an opinion without using violence. To obstruct an invited guest's way and engage in a shoving match with him is a severe break with etiquette. How could the faculty members and other students look on with folded arms while radical students create such a fuss? |
So, I'm thinking, O.K. they recognize that it was a knucklehead move and they should be embarrassed. Then, in the same paper - same edition I see this article:
http://joongangdaily.joins.com/200505/03/200505032231147109900090409041.html
Which icluded the following description of teachers behavior:
Quote: |
A scheduled public hearing on the Education Ministry's plan for on-the-job evaluations was never held yesterday, as protests from members of the teachers' union brought the meeting to a halt.
Members of the Korean Teachers' Union took over the podium, chanting that evaluations are "just another excuse to blame teachers." |
Is there any wonder why students feel free to act like total asses sometimes? |
