|
|
I've heard people talk about small stand-alone air conditioning units that require no installation, but I've never seen one. I've tried LG, Costo, and a few other stores. Where can I get one?
The ones I've seen online (but not deliverable to Korea) start from around $275.
Likethis: http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=2694599
or this http://www.qualityair-america.com/su903aircodi.html
I'd also consider a window unit but I've been told they don't exist in Korea.
For people who have seen either type, can you tell me WHERE to get one?
Last summer my apartment got up to 100 degrees! |

| They must be available somewhere in Korea because my hagwon two jobs ago had one. It was a heater and an air-conditioner rolled into one. It quit working in the winter after a pack of middle school boys rolled into it, so we never got a chance to try out the air-conditioner part of it. |

Window units are around. I bought a very good used unit at the neighborhood used appliances shop (most 'hoods have 'em) for W100,000. Quite a good deal. Put it in the window myself and it can cool my entire apt. on a hot day (about 13 pyong).
Just look around your area for the shops with old refrigerators and washers sitting out front. You'll only need to go to a couple to find what you need. Usually have good cheap used TVs and VCRs as well as fans (not worth it) and more. |

I bought a used unit some years ago for 100,000 (if I remember correctly). Gave it to a friend and as far as I know it's still going strong.
Just a comment on the installation thing, though. It's often part of the price and even if it isn't, it shouldn't be more thean 50,000 |

| The stand-alone ones are available, we got one, but apparently they are hard to find these days.... They are cool because they don't need installation. I hope you find one! |

| Beav, it's still going, but it'll only be good for the bedroom, and it is kinda noisy. Where'd you get your newer, on the wall, mounted one? That one rocks and we're in the market for one in our living room. Didn't you say it cost 300,000w or something? |

I've given up on window or portable units. I'll take any kind as long as it's not too expensive.
I got the phone number of the used appliance place in Samgakji but they didn't answer their phone and I have no directions to their shop. Does anyone here know how to get there?
Tourist Info (1330) said that the cheapest place to get a new one is Yongsan, but you have to negotiate. They said to ask for one of last year's models for about 300k or one of the current models for 400+. They didn't specify the type of A/C. They said it's cheaper than going to a discount department store like WalMart or E-Mart. Is this true?
Has anyone here bought one recently for less than 400 including installation? Where did you go, what kind did you get, and how can I contact that store? |

| Oh, and I tried calling the number on Lotte.com but they didn't speak English. Good site, though! |

| The Samgakji recycling center quoted me 190,000 for a small used wall mounted unit plus 100,000 for installation. Does that seem fair? I don't think I can get cheaper than that. |
