I'm in the same position as Hotuk and agree with him. Also had the same thing happen with somebody who I had given advice to using me as a reference. I don't want to be swamped with people looking for jobs at my univ.

Besides I already have a list of people I have known for years here that know if a position would open up I would recommend them for it

OK, but people could at least say which city their university is in. That wouldn't give too much information away. I'm wondering if there is a big difference between the degrees of Seoul Uni teachers and non-Seoul uni teachers.

I'm with Hotuk and Rudy. We have a very low turnover at my university. Any vacancies that do come up are usually filled by friends of the current staff. The school never advertises on Daves or other boards. I think that is something people don't seem to realize. The good jobs don't need to advertise. The teachers are more than happy to recommend someone. That way we don't have to deal with the oddballs.
But I'll tell you this, my university is near the center of Seoul and probably not a school anyone has ever heard of.

Thankfully our surpervisor is more concerned with staff compatibility and harmony than with Masters degrees.

In my department:
12 hours
3-4 day schedule
20 wks paid vacation
large private office with brand new computer and television with cable
housing
2.4 mil
3 M.A.s

At my university there are many B.A.s, but they don't teach in academic departments.

I'm on my 3rd University gig and I still only have a BA. I'll be starting my MA in Fall, cuz things are bound to tighten up at some point. My previous uni mostly had BA's, my current uni is more 60/40 in favor of MA's.

Many of my friends working in a uni only have BA's. It's all about how you market yourself. Getting a uni gig does not depend solely on an MA. I even got my present gig over a few MA candidates.

Read this thread and listen to what the_beaver says.

Most of the the teachers at my University don't have one, though some are working one theirs now. I was a little taken back by this really. At my old University, why down south, most of us, including me, had ours.

You don't need a Masters degree to do a good job at a university. Doesn't make you any better as a teacher either. If you can't teach then no higher degree is going to help you.

Is a good way to weed the chaff from the hey though. It may also mean the holder of masters degree will have a bit more maturity to bring into the classroom.

After all is said and done though you all end up doing the same sh---.

Understanding and an appreciation of the culture helps too. Some teachers can be like a bull in a chin shop and tread on very sensitive issues. Others have the brains to not say things that the natives wont appreciate.

Students do have power and their evaluation of you can be the end or the continuation of your job

I agree with you, Medic, but I sure hope you don't use made-up words like "naturity" in the classroom. Wink

I remember speaking to a Korean student who graduated in English from Yengnam university in Kyungsan about their expat teachers. She on an off hand remark said was really saddened about how students conspired to get an expat teacher she knew of and liked ,kicked out of the university. According to her they made some dumb sarcastic comment, and her reply was "Grow up". The said students who were on the recieving end of the remark actually managed to get her thrown out because of it.

To top it off she had to go through the humiliation of a farewell party sponsered by her department. She actually cried in front of them because she was really hoping to make a contribution.

Just goes to show you.
