I'm just curious as to why the mods would decide to lock the latest wife-beater thread. It's a sensitive topic, to be sure, but most of us will encounter this disgusting situation here and in some cases might be able to put a stop to or mitigate some of the abuse against women that takes place here. I've only seen it happen once out on the street, but have heard some really crazy screaming coming from downstairs, and advice like what some were offering on the thread might well come in handy some day.

I was wondering about that thread getting locked too. A little explanation would be nice.

Usually happens when the content isn't quite ripe to be a deleted thread but the conversation is getting too aggressive. They lock it to give people time to cool down without having to delete the thread.

Don't know if that is the situation this time, but I would expect so.
(Off to read the thread to confirm my suspicions.)

Precisely. It's a very emotional topic. Usually the mods put a small explanation on the last post such as "locked for a time out", but that was accidentally overlooked in this case.

I imagine we could give the thread another go tonight.

Yeah, it's dangerous when internet emotions run high. Someone's keyboard could get beaten.

Seriously though it is (maybe) better than having the post deleted out from under you. Mind you I think that post will either die right away or will end up getting deleted. It is a topic people are emotional about and I think both sides are trolling a bit, whether consciously or not.
