Today I was told by my supervisor that there are no morning classes. Naturally I was pleased to hear this and was about to go home. This was not to be, as she told me I was supposed to stay and work on curriculum.
I asked her what type of work ... well not much only a bit of fooling around with a new web-based lesson plan (little fox for those who know). This didn't take too long, and for the last 2 hours I've been sitting around, reading up on the UEFA cup, Checking out CBC, and doing nothing.
I asked if I could go home but was told that we, me and my supervisor are supposed to be there even if we dont have too teach. (none of the other koreans are here just us 2) At my last job, this wasn't the case... so I told her. Her response, its part of the contract to be here so its fair... my response why I'm not doing anything!?!
Before I make a stronger stand on it, I'm curious to see what other teachers have to say on this.
Cheers, |

Don't complain; they may FIND something for you to do during that. Come up with your own hobbies. What could be sweeter than getting paid to play around with your hobbies on a daily basis? |

Korea is all about putting in face time Whether you are productive or not is of secondary importance.
I had to come in for half days during tests. And I've got two full days off next week where i have to be there and not teaching.
After I've done my prep I do my korean homework and play on daves. |

I like to read, I like to watch rugby, and I've got an office all to myself. If there's no work to be done, I'm happy to nest in here.
In my experience, complaining about having nothing to do usually results in being given some simple, tedious, repetitive task to do over and over just to keep you occupied; so I just keep my mouth shut, and clock out on time. |

Are you at least allowed to leave the building? If there's a gym or PC-bang around you could try killing time that way - just leave your briefcase and jacket behind and take long lunches, etc.
I've taken to coming into work earlier than I have to, writing up my lessons and making crosswords and searchwords and stuff when there's nobody around and the computer and photocopier are all mine, and then going to the gym or jogging or whatever. |

Hey they are paying ya to sit there so just make the most of it. No it doesn't make a lot of sense but it isn't worth rocking the boat over. Just find something you enjoy doing and do that (after you've done whatever you were supposed to do, if infact anything)... of course maybe what your supervisor is saying is bollocks and she just wants to spend some quality time with ya... |

Hell, even when I do have classes I'm not really doing anything. |

Be thankful. See the brandy glass as half full (as I do) rather than half empty (as I do just before I top it up again).
In these blissful moments of repose, I stretch my legs out on the desk, take a sip of Hennessy, and simply lose myself in reverie. Life is too short, my friend, and such moments are made for savoring (preferably with ice and a slice of lemon). |

Drinking at work?
On second thought that does seem a tad bit tempting. Though I think a tequila popper before you start class might not be out of the question. I wonder if my kindy kids can stomach a shot? Might keep them quiet for 5 minutes...................
Ok thats just wrong...
Hmm possible time to work on that degree in underwater basket weaving? |
