Just wondering if anyone else has been in this position. Various idiot neighbours keep you up all night when you're not feeling that well to begin with. (One guy was banging on my door at four in the morning and then singing for half an hour outside my apt.) You call in sick and explain that not getting any sleep is part of the reason why, knowing that your understaffed hogwan will be screwed without you. Do you think your school, which is paying rent on three apartments in the building, might actually get on the landlord to do something about it?

Probably not, my recommendation is to save some money and get your own apartment in a neighborhood that you like. 5-10 million should be enough.

IIIIIIIIIIII think that your boss probably has idiot neighbours, too. Know I do.

I also knowwww that taking sick days in Korea is the best and fastest way to get fired.

I've now taken one in 5 1/2 months. I also think that when you're not feeling very well to start with and one person's drunking singing from 4-5, another's loud alarm clock ringing from 6-7, and then someone trying to pound down another neighbour's door, stop you from getting hardly any sleep... that's what sick days are for.

Anyways, I think that as far as job security goes, mine is fairly good and I'm thinking about looking for a public school or uni job for Septemeberish anyways.

You're right, though - they probably think this is something that everyone should just put up with.

Unfortunately, this may be true.

You may like the place, but because you took a couple of sick days during the year, you do not have your contract renewed. Do not get sick. STAY PERFECTLY HEALTHY.

Trust me, I really don't care if they don't want to renew my contract.

I dont think anyone expects you to stay perfectly healthy. Koreans get sick all the time. Keeping working regardless is the real expectation.

I just took a week off for sick leave. If you actually are sick use your sick days...if you arent sick save your sick days til the end of your contract and treat yourself to a few long weekends.

Western slackass attitude that flies in the face of working reality here. Workplaces are not set up to cover your sofa-bound butt when youve got the sniffles -- co-workers are seriously inconvenienced. Even worse, taking time off "just because" is lazy & reprehensible.

whatever Schwa....if you are entitled to sick leave..you should take it otherwise you are an idiot!

Really Shocked just what do you consider a 'serious' inconvenience?

Why do you place the responsibility on the FT's shoulder? Shouldnt it be the responsability of the hogwan owner to have a contingency plan?

Fact is people get sick...taking a day off to recover makes a hell of a lot more sense than staggering in to work and putting a movie in a VCR.

I'm with Schwa, Grotto you have a seriously screwed up attitude towards work but would make a great militant unionist!

Taking sick leave when you are sick is all well and good, that's of course why it's provided for under Korean law. However, taking sick leave just because you can, is a slack attitude to have. However I'm not going to condemn you, it's something you have brought with you from back home and thus it should be cherished and nutured.

I'm with Grotto on this one. Coming in when you're too sick and tired to work properly doesn't strike me as especially professional. Making the bosses problems your own isn't always the best way to handle things, imo. Taking two or three sick days a year is normal for a single person; someone with kids who get sick shouldn't even contemplate a hogwan job.

Maybe to you it does. Not to your boss, I'd wager.

You should read what Grotto actually said in its entirety before making a comment bum suck.

Let me clarify a few things.

My first year here I dragged myself in no matter how sick I was. I covered a few classes or combined classes for other FT's when they took their sick days. Was I seriously incovenienced? No. At the end of the year I had 4 sick days that I hadnt used...every other teacher at the hogwan had used all 4 of their sick days...so basically I worked 4 more days than they did for the same pay. WHY?

Fidel I will make a deal with you...when hogwan owners start acting like professionals then you can say something. Taking 3 or 4 days off a year(that you are entitled to) is neither immoral or unprofessional. I kind of laugh at your statement...great I work 340 days without missing a day, being late or anything...yet if I take a couple of days off within the last month I am all of the sudden unprofessional Laughing You are funny Exclamation
