if anyone anywhere takes your passport from you without your consent you should immediately contact your embassy and file a complaint. That is one thing they will raise hell about.

Sorry, but I doubt it! My embassy wouldn't do squat but maybe help me get another one.

This is another area where the Brits have one up on us (although we have one right back when we get our pension contribs returned to us)... if a Brit passport is seized by unscrupulous school owners, the Embassy sends in what some have called the "God Squad" to retrieve Her Majesty's property.

It's the only time the Australian embassy will offer help to a teacher, if their passport is seized and held, otherwise you're on your own. Smile

I got busted for working before I got my E-2.

I was in a bad situation. To make it short.

Just finished one contract. Had Pneumonia. Got another job. Went to USA for 1 month vacation between contracts. New job location went out of business. Came back to no job. Lived in a hotel and interviewed furiously. Took a job with Discovery School in Ichon. Moved out of hotel into new apartment. Told the next day I must start work NOW or get the hell out. Was assured I wouldn't have to worry, and that people work while getting the E-2 "all of the time" and never have problems.

Immigration raided my school on my 2nd day of work. They took my passport and fined me 500,000 won. Had to practically bribe the boss to pay my part of the fine (she first said she would, but then backed out). I lost the job. Had to fly to japan and back because I got an "exit order", (500,000 won flight at my cost) and then fly there and back AGAIN the next week after I found another job.

So basically had to pay a lot of money out of my pocket and didn't get a paycheck for over 2 months.
