Ex-pats Describe Korea's Culture of Corruption

Individual Selfishness Damages Economy
Collective selfishness is all the rage despite the fact that the Korean economy still has a long way to reach its goal. People are more concerned about having their own share of the pie rather than cooperating with each other to help society in a general way.

A Society that Spares Greetings
A police officer said that the expression "sorry" seemed to be very hard to say, adding that people often fight over small things such as saying sorry and came to the police station. There are many people who point out that it is rare to hear basic words like "sorry" or "thank you" in Korean society.

Seoul National University Sociology professor Han Sang-jin pointed out that the extremely low level of maturity of people's mindsets, which lacks consideration for others, is associated with a social culture in which people do not exchange greetings. Professor Han said that due to the "rushing modernization," referring to a mad dash to accomplish one's goals such as attaining social success, Korean society is seriously lacking in consideration of other people.

Nice to see some actual sources are in agreement with me. Kind of funny that a crotchety old fart who can't live in a land where people disagree with her, a goofball who calls Aljazera a credible news source, and an angry gyopo have to gang up and talk trash in a mad search for credibility.

Guys, admit it -- Korea is pretty high up there on the cheat-to-save-face ladder. You're all just bitter because you are you.

By the way... for the past year, I've been teaching 18 hours/week with housing and partial healthcare for 2.1. And about 3 1/2 months of vacation to boot. Not the best deal out there, but I'd venture to say that more than a few people wouldn't mind getting Derrek'd. Wink

And unlike many, I can always go back and get a job at home NOT teaching.

Yeah, by the way, I saw the way you gracefully and humbly accepted my apology on the other thread. You are just one class act, you are.

I live in a land where I often disagree and am disagreed with- RESPECTFULLY.

Your credibility and face, at this moment, is zero.

ZZZZzzzzzz...... yeah, right.. I see "sorry" written all over your posts in this thread. Please spare us the "I'm sorry (but really just positioning myself with the mods)" speech.

By the way, your avatar looks pretty cute with another head on it at that other board.

Anyone's who's dated a k-girl knows they don't freely nor willy-nilly splash out with their apologies.

If I remember correctly, Michael Breen said in his book that for a Korean to apologise was like saying "hang me" (or words to that effect).

I understand it's a different way of doing things here, where saving face is all so important and it's something I've learnt to put up with. Actually, I find it quite amusing to watch some people's fine display of lying.

The denial of any wrongdoing by obviously guilty people seems a lot more prevelant here than at home and the Koreans I've spoken to don't disagree much. It's then that I point out they're not too different from the few Japanese who try and cover up their country's past evils.

You've got to just laugh!

Yeah. If there's one thing people around the world agree on, it's when America is wrong, America admits it. Not like those Koreans.

I've always contended that it's the Confucian thing again. In my interactions with the natives, older, "superior" beings, often have a hard time admitting they're wrong to inferiors.
I also think this is one of the things that keeps the North from following suit with all the other communist regimes that either crumbled or modified their ideologies to accomodate some economic growth. If they go down now, it'll be like admitting they were wrong...also makes me think they may start something just to get it over with. If they are soundly crushed by the Capitalist Imperials, they won't have to admit anything....
