118 Foreigners Caught Working Illegally
Among the foreigners, Americans were the most numerous with 38, followed by 16 Canadians, five Germans, four British, four French and four Japanese. There were also people from Australia, Ireland, Italy and Spain. By job categories, advertising business hire the most people illegally at 49, followed by the entertainment sector with 40. There were 23 English instructors hired illegally and 13 were hired in the broadcasting area.
The Seoul Immigration Bureau said Monday that it apprehended the violators, while levying a total of 38.8 million won on the foreigners before deporting 38 of them. The ministry claimed punishments in many cases need to be increased because most of the foreigners were receiving huge remunerations, and will consequently consider raising the fines.
The employers and brokers were fined a total of 62.5 million won, the bureau added.

RR, you missed the great closing paragraph!

Yeah! To hell with advertisers!!!
(yipes!)
And 13 illegals in broadcasting If at least half that number aren't gyopos, then I'm calling "RACISM!!!" (Or they'd better define what they mean by "broadcasting")

Someone I know who works at Incheon Airport tells me that Immigration makes entertainment visas difficult to get. A lot of the big acts that come here from abroad end up performing on landing visas. That 4 million is nothing. Immigration could have busted MUCH higher profile celebrities if they wanted do.
Hub of Asia, right? |

Notice that only a VERY small part of those were English teachers? 23 out off 110? Wow.... not much to worry about, eh?
Some MASSIVE illegal teacher crackdown (ahahahah).
This one made me laugh, too:
"The K-1 tournament for mixed martial arts (MMA) was also found to be the place where foreigners were working without proper documentation. "
Also, I'm guessing they busted a lot of people doing illegal acting on TV shows. I know for a fact that one popular foreigner show on TV was paying over 1,000,000 won per week in hush money to immigration for quite some time. Why don't they ever report this in the media? |

Do the Korean advertising firms use Western models or copywriters or what?

Russian bargirls from Uijeongbu to Busan, everyone sees them, everyone knows the score.... And who does Korean Immigration go after? People at a martial arts tournament ( ... still don't get that one), 13 people in "broadcasting", some people in "advertising", and one "very famous German DJ" -- That's who. |

I think more than a few English teachers have been hired as company representatives. They do PR for the company and a bit of teaching on the side (me thinks). |
